Ironically, the Japanese are using the american iron quite a bit for there stuff now, IE Mazda B series is a ranger, Isuzu uses S-10. Don't get me started on how Ford's ridiculous parsimony wrecked the B-series by putting it on the Ranger platform and alienating the Mazda truck's customer base. Now they want to ruin the Protege the same way by sharing a platform fith the Focus. Keep them separate Ford, and enjoy owning more breadth of the small car market.
