Black cars are the best looking when clean, but they're also the hardest to clean. A friend of mine has a Pitch Black Focus SVT with the Euro headlights and all blacked out stuff. It looks friggin awesome, because he washes it every week, waxes it every month, and fully details it every 6 months. Gotta be dedicated to rock a black car, mangh.

Chances are that a pro detailer who can use (not misuse) a rotary buffer can help take out most of those scratches and the swirl marks. Here's some eye candy for you: Ferrari Detail Day at Meguiar's In that thread, they show a scratch one guy had on his Ferrari and how they removed it with a rotary buffer. I've read other threads on how to remove swirl marks. Another good site to read about detailing is: Autopia.org.

As promised, the after pics. It was really bright out, and I was out since 6 AM, so they are a little noisy. All-in-all, he did a great job. He got it clean, clayed it, buffed it as best he couls and then shined it up. Some of the deeper swirl marks are still visible, as well as the deeper scratched. He suggested taking it to a real body shop if I want the scratches and scuffs repaired. The paint is glass smooth to the touch now though, and he put on a couple of coats of paste wax to keep it protected for now.

Answering the questons..

Those are Rev Type XIIs in 17x7 w/ Toyo Proxes in 215/40-17. I put them on about a month ago or so, after the weather warmed up, keeping the stock rims for the winter tires I'll get.

I do have a cat, but no pre-cats due to my MSDS headers. He offered to polish up the tips, but I have a True-Bendz Magnaflow catback coming, so I told him to let it go and concentrate on the paint.

OK, my turn for a question. The brake rotors were the ones I got from Stazi, but like an ass, I didn't get them plated. Is it worth it to get them stripped and plated, or would it make more sense to get new ones instead? Any suggestions as to brand/source? I had my calipers painted when I had my headers installed, and the rust really detracts from the look.

Next projects:

1. Exhaust
2. Installing the Steeda shifter from the G/B.
3. Tinting the windows, amybe a 40% smoke.

Thanks for the advice guys. Appreciate the help.

Correction: Rev Type X Wheels

He charged me $130, including the claying. He works out of Staten Island, NY and usually does show cars. The rcovery he did on the paint is amazing given the cumulative damage.

He can also do stuff like navigation systems, DVD players, alarms, remote starters etc. For the immediate area around Staten Island, like central Jersey, he can arrange to come to you. His web site:

NY Perfect Detailing

Ask for Brian. He's a good guy.

I know I need tints. I have an appointment for next weekend. Just going to do a 40% smoke, front and rearr. Then off to a body guy for more repairs.

Yeah, I corrected myself in my last post. The rims are really sweet, and even though I was ambivalent on the polished lip for the gunmetal ones I got, they really grew on me. Plus by going slightly lower profile, I got a little more drop out of the car. I highly recommend the Toyos too. the grip and wet weather performance are fantastic.

Usually I wouldn't pull up an old thread, but the guy who did my detailing also posted the SVT, as well as some other of his work on Autopia.

The shots he took include a good close up of the swirl marks on the trunk lid before wash, after wash, and after buffing.

Here they go:

Autopia Boards

Thanks to perry for letting me know.

Damn, black cars are HIGH-MAINTENANCE b!tches, aren't they!? Like most people, I love my car when it's clean- all 15 minutes of it....

Yours is looking pretty sweet there, though. I'm in the same boat, my paint's decent- what kills me is the 5 or 6 GLOPS of touch-up paint the previous owner used to try to cover some light scratches. Think "massive orange peel". One of these days, I'll get around to wetsanding them and getting a full detail....

Your detail guy did a grat job, BTW....
