I have had a number of e mails on this subject so info for all, some is quite basic.
As we know air density increases with reduction in temp(Charles Law) so where do we want the air intake to the filter?,in a cool air supply. Can we 'ram' it into an air box etc for more 'pressure' effect, yes but bear in mind a well designed scoop, ram duct etc will only give you around 0.5psi pressure at around 100mph!,the key is getting cool air into either an 'air box'or similar device then keeping it cool right into the engine(cool=high density=more hp)any pipe from the air intake via ducts, filters to the throttle body needs to stay cool, that means either insulation or materials that will not pick up heat from the engine compartment and transfer it to the air.Specific to the Zetec & Duratec air intake/cleaner systems some points to note. The size of the air cleaner volume on the 2.0 is 'on the edge',its volume just makes it,the 2.5 is around the same internal volume, too small for 'performance breathing',why?,because we couldn't get a bigger box in!,its that simple. So key points*Draw intake air from a cool, clean source*Keep it cool right to the engine*If you use an 'air box' type set up make it the biggest internal volume you can(put that bloody battery in the trunk I say!).Hope that covers it.I'll pen together some info on turbos as it seems we are all looking for a 'bolt on',to get a worthwhile turbo set up a lot of factors have to be acessed.More to follow.Regards to all.TAH

On my car, I'm using a scoop made by Twowheelin that plugs into 2 1/4 " hose. The hose i routed through the fender, and ended up pluggin it into my KKM filter. The whole ram air setup provides a nice gain, especially at higher speeds. The problem is, if I go into neutral at high speeds (>45 mph), air is still being forced into the engine. The revs plummet, and the car stalls.

Here's a pic that I've posted before regarding this:

Twowheelin has come up with a solution to the problem. Hes got kind of a cone at the filter end of his 2 1/4 " hose, so the air flows over the whole filter, not just the inside part. perhaps that would help...

Here's how we modify the S&B filter. Note where the IAT is. No problems at all. Makes it a lot easier to return to stock if you need to go back to your dealer. You don't need to undo all those hoses going to the flex tube.

I agree, the inside & the outside of the cone pull in air.Only cooler air from outside when in motion right, rest of time air from engine bay.I'd cone the whole filter and feed all of its surface with cool air.On the idle speed, the blue tube in your pic is to the PCV system, have you kept the stock size adaptor or is it bigger?,this can effect the idle as the pcv system uses metered air from the maf. Thanks for the info TAH

Run these numbers guys.Your existing HP X the sq root of the sum obtained when your existing air intake temp(in absolute,Kelvin)is devided by your proposed intake temp(which we all assume is lower right!),this gives the bhp gain with lower air intake temp.

Terry,

I just put the KKM intake on my car. I could not find a way to use the small screen from the old airbox (the really fine screen just before the MAF). I assumed this was simply to straighten the flow from the conical fillter. Was I correct, and are there any adverse (or positive) effects to leaving it off?

Yeah, that's why I'm gonna be running this thing in the spring. Just need to move my battery to the trunk, and pick up a stock '98 4.6 MAF and swap in the crap from my factory MAF. Probably need to figure out where to run a good diameter hose, too.

Now THAT looks more like a system that will ONLY have cool air from outside the car!TAH

Terry, I suggest we put the air filter in the bumper and run a pipe up from that through the side fenderwell. The cooler the air filter the better. I have installed a really nice IceMan intake for a Honda Civic that was just about as good as your could get. The filter was relocated into the side of the bumper.
