I agree 100% with bzcat! I have a 99 zx2, and it moves. They are about the same in acceleration as the svt focus....which has 170hp...I'm guessing its mainly the gearing that gives the zx2 its zing....it pulls harder in 1st gear than my svt does... :rolleyes:

97+ 4-door Escorts with MTX pull fairly well, about the same as 86-90 Escort GT's (115 HP), but no Si killer. Good for daily driving, if someone is looking for a "beater".
Brother has a '97 MTX and with no A/C, has more power than the 91 he had before (also no A/C). When I park my Contour next to his, he and his wife can't tell them apart.
Only way to tell ZX2's by the year (besides VIN) is some had one year only colors. Also, newer ones say "ZX2" only on the rear, no 'Escort' tags.
2000 SE fleet, V6, ATX, ABS, no spoiler, T-Green/tan. Built 01/2000 in MO.
Added 12 spoke factory SE rims, K&N. Biggest mod: ESP Plan!

When the Taurus was #1, they thought, well let's make em all look like it. But, ours are the best!
The 1997+ Escort kind of killed Contours, since buyers thought "it looks same but cheaper". Also, salesdorks pushed Escorts or Tauri.

Production of the 2003 ZX2 starts in July I was told. A ford employee that works inthe small engine development team told me this.

I suppose some people just don't have a knack for the obvious. (or are just not car savvy) They don't look remotely the same save for from the rear and at night. You can still tell the difference by the smaller size and different reflector right away though.

I read in Detroit News/Free Press:
"Ford Motor Co. plans to eliminate about 600 jobs, or a fifth of the workforce, at a Mexican plant when the world's second-largest automaker stops production of the Escort small car on June 28."
If the ZX2 only is still running for 2003, then it may be for CAFE reasons.
