Not really and audio person. I have all stock stuff. I though my speakers were blown, so I started to replace them, but they still sound blown...distorted. I stopped with the rear speakers.

Could this be the stereo itself causing this? Common?

well, if you replaced the speakers and they still sounded bad, thats not the problem. maybe your problem is that the weak stock head unit is just not putting out enough power, making your bass sound weak/distorted when you turn up the volume.

the ford head units are junk

Well, I just ordered a Sony CDX-L300. I don't need anything extreme, just something that sounds good.

I would think that wiring problems would cause crackling if it was shorting, or static if there were interference but I don't know that much about this stuff.

Could the wiring cause my distortion problems?

If it were only 1 speaker then wiring would be a possibility but chances are that if all of them sound like junk, your head unit is junk. Stock headunits are awful!!!! they only put out less than 10 watts a channel and the stock speakers are awful too. For a good entry level upgrade, look to pioneer on the head unit. You can get a decent unit on ebay for appx $100. As for speakers, you can check ebay as well or even (dare I say this) check Circuit City or best buy for some drop in 5x7's like some infinity reference or polk's. In the interest of money, only replace your fronts to start, that is the majority of the volume that you hear as the driver

Next time Best Buy has a "Buy one pair, get the second pair 1/2 price" sale on speakers...IM THERE! I'd only spend $150 on speakers then smile But, I want to find a new HU, Id LIKE to find something that fills BOTH holes in the dash...that storage thingy looks so cheap! I heard Nakamichi makes a 1 DIN cassette tuner, and a in-dash DIN-sized CD changer, but I have NO clue where I'd find Nakamichi, or how much it would cost. I just want it to have good sound, look COMPLETELY stock, and (possibly) fill both holes, with CD. Im picky, what can I say? :p

If you want to fill the second space either go with a pioneer or alpine aftermarket eq. Also, the new Alpine V-12 amps have a special add on controller that can control up to 8 amps, it would fit into the dash and it controls all of the amps settings not just the gain.
