It's not nearly as hairy as it looks...every clip that attaches to the car is coated with rubber coating & the load-bearing happens on the bumper. The feet on the trunk are more or less carrying no weight.
Honestly if my car was brand new, I would get a roof rack. My car has over 100k on it and its far from perfect...so I really don't mind the strap-on method for the bikes.
