I understand, but I read alot about the big diesels and modding them and at least for the big Cats and Detriots and Cummins, all that smoke is just unburned fuel, that can be fixed. EGTs are not the greatest either. Not saying your wrong, and I dont know exactly what the chips on the smaller diesels do, so Im gonna shut up now 
Check out the horsepower articles here. 3600 ft/lb diesels with no smoke screens. One of those articles talks about the excess smoke.
Those are big rigs. Big bore straight 6's. My motor pales in comparison to those monsters. Diesels are gonna smoke no matter what be it under load or when it's really cold out. It's just one of the added perks of owning one
