Dan G from the boards did it, he's helping me fix the problems. I don't need to hear that I need to get rid of the car or who should pay for it, I need to hear how to fix the stuff.

Where did you & Dan get the engine? Bone yard? That may be the whole problem there. I can't really give a happy diagnosis on this based on your written description, obviously. From what you have described, your path will not be a happy one. Maybe Demons old 3L is available...
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Got it from a boneyard, but the engine looked spotless in the interior. Who did I have to piss off though, to get a bad clutch/flywheel AND engine? Originally posted by SpliceVW:
3) Tapping sound at low RPMs, goes away at about 2000. Sounds like its coming from lower engine. Just changed the oil, seemed to get better but still there.
4) Hissing/scraping sound, NO CLUE what the hell it is. Quiet but prominent, can only hear it when I'm driving next to a car or wall. Non-existant at idle, revving engine with clutch pedal down still causes the sound so its not the bad clutch/flywheel.
5) Excessive oil in intake. Not coming from the engine. No ideas.
Those are the 3 that need solving the most, particularly the hissing/scraping sound. Never heard anything like it before. I don't need to hear that I should be upgrading to 3L (unless you wanna help me pay) or putting a new engine in, I need help solving these problems.

Did the car in the yard have front end damage - particularly on the driver side? If so, the output shaft on that motor may not have been true. Perhaps the flywheel has a wobble in it. IIRC, the clutch must be aligned carefully when installing as well.
This is a tough one, & perhaps beyond my experience.

Q#3 Did you torque the Crank dampener bolt correctly? If not that is the timming sprocket/dampener spining back and forth on the crank. Not good. It could also be one of the accesories or pulleys not being on tight enough or mis-aliagned.
Q#4 possible vacuum sound (did not seal the gasket around the oil pan correctly?) or blow by (which I am kind of leaning towards.)
Q#5 If it is not coming from the motor, where is it comming from? I am thinking with #4 being blow by, you are getting too much pressure in the manifold causing oil to enter the intake via PCV.
That is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head. I know it was not much help, but something to look at.

3) I didn't do it, I'll see if Dan has any idea.
4/5) You'll have to forgive me, I'm still learning about the basics of an engine. If the PCV valves are the what are hooked up to the intake via the little rubber hoses, then yes, that's where its coming from. Dan did say something about blow-by.. if that's the case, what could be causing excessive blow-by, and how would it get fixed? If the O2 sensor could cause excessive blow-by, I will be a very happy person unless my engine is now damaged.
If this helps any, the hissing/scraping sound doesn't increase with engine RPMs, but its not there during idle.

Don't know why it was in the yard, the engine was already pulled. Dan says he used an alignment tool I think, I'll be sure and double check.
I thought of more to add to the tapping sound.. I now believe that the change in oil did *not* help get rid of the sound. It was probably just my mind playing tricks on me, just like I thought the clutch was getting better (I was just getting more used to it).
Also, it seems to me that its not as regular as when I had the major knocking on my first engine. Its a consistant tap tap tap, but when revved you can't really hear it that well, and the tapping increases in frequency but isn't quite as consistant.

I don't think your engine is damaged yet. The only way for blow-by to happen is if you have bad rings or the timming is off causing higher pressure in the engine, this would coincide with the noise in #3 because that will throw your timming off.

I just noticed something else too.. when I only give it a *little tiny* bit of gas, the hissing sound doesn't exist, instead its a very faint whistling.
Anyways.. how does the timing get messed up, and how do I fix that?
