That's where my current waterpump that needs to be replaced is from. Napa, I bought the one that came with the metal impellar. Now what? Do you think they have a warrenty? I will have to call and ask them.

Last year Ford put Five (YES FIVE) water pumps on my '96 Mystake in less then six months.

They couldn't tell me why there was problem after problem with all the pumps until I came completely unglued on the return of the fourth pump.
Turns out they were installing them wrong... So, I asked for a different mechanic to fix the problem.
They also replaced all the hoses and the thermostat.

My '96 Mystake continued to run hot in slow traffic so I returned it.
They replaced the pressure cap on the overflow and it seems to do slightly better.

Where is the thermostat and how hard is it to change out with the higher temp one? I have asked FORD about this, and they don't seem to understand me or take me serious. I have told them I have read about this on this sight and they don't seem to be interested.

If I do this myself, will it help?

Should be a lifetime warranty. The metal impeller pumps have SOMETIMES had problems with the seals going bad & the pump leaking. The only pump I know of that seems to have few problems is the one with the white plastic impeller.

Has anybody had trouble with one of the white impeller pumps??

2 Questions:
What kept going wrong with your pumps?
What was the mechanic doing wrong?

I ask because I just had my WP changed and it started leaking out the weep hole within 1 week. I purchased the WP from NAPA, and was able to get them to cover the 2nd repair (both WP & labor).

Even worse news. The 2nd pump is leaking also. It was changed only 4 days ago! The mechanic must be installing it incorrectly. Too much tension on the bearing or something?

Anyone have any guesses as to what the heck they could be doing wrong?

other than (and only if they are only changing the WP housing that bolts on, and not the ENTIRE WP assembly) maybe that they aren't cleaning the old gasket off the engine block, and then they aren't sealing?

Dude... I am as lost as you are on this one...

All FORD would tell me is the mechanic was installing the wrong. The car would run hot in slower traffic and after a few days, it would start dripping. The third one started running out on the service floor when they pulled the car around for me to pick it up. They seemed to be stumped too.

I never got a clear answer out of the dealership... but this last one seems to be fine and I have not had a leak for close to six months now. The car still runs hot in slower traffic and with warmer weather coming I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Should I change out my therm? How hard is it to do? I've head where there is one which will open and allow it to cool at lower temps. Is this true?

I have a white plastic impeller in my car. I have seen posts from several owners of 99s that have well over 100k miles on theirs with no problems thus far. Post a querry/pole to get feedback from the owners of various types of pumps.

Additionally, I read one post a few months ago where somebody indicated the metal impeller was less agressive than the plastic ones, causing the cars to run hotter than normal.

Changing your thermostat to one that is a few degrees cooler would allow the car to run a little cooler (but if the problem is not just a "normally hot" running car, then all you are doing is covering up the problem cause, by another means.

IS.. if your WP impellar is cracked, the car will run hotter, because there is less surface area to move the coolant... installing a lower temp thermo there wouldn't ACTUALLY fix it.. (I know you understand, but I was writing this out for future readers to stumble across.....)

Anyway.. it IS true that they make different temp ranges for thermostats, and it is relatively easy to do.. seperate the t-stat housing from the hose, and then do the swap-er-roo... easy as pie...
