Wow... after spending the better part of an evening wrenching and pulling on the hoses connected to my water pump... I got it out. I say there for a minute... trying to build up the the motivation to crack open the waterpump.

I did. The impeller was broken in two pieces. It was all chewed up. I'm happy... I had nightmares of opening the pump and having everything hunky-dorey inside... That the problem would be with some other part of the engine.

I'm happy. Though, before I start up the car, I'll be sure to backflush really good... I want to get all the bits of plastic out of there.

I just want to thank everyone for the help and diagnosis.

Just for the record, what color is the impeller on that plastic pump you removed?

The replacement should be a white/cream color plastic or metal - Yes? Please say yes...

The one I removed was the stock water pump... It had a black impeller and actually lasted 118k miles... so not too bad.

Man, those hoses were such a pain to get off... The last one i only got off because some drunk car mechanic was walking by and helped me (I live in a neighborhood with frat houses, etc)

I know this may sound like a dumb question but how can you tell when its your water pump? Last year I flushed and filled the rad, and replaced the thermostat and it still gets in the red. Thanks.

Okay.. main notices when your waterpump goes out:

  • No heat from the vents..
  • Pegged needle under ANY load from the car, and even from idle after 10-15 mins..

Maybe a tip or both tips of your impellar broke off(but not the entire impellar) and are causing "less" flow, but not too little flow...??

Another, much simpler, option is that you replaced your thermostat with a higher temperature one, and it isn't opening until a much higer temp (ie: in the red)

i wish i would have thought to replace the waterpump myself before getting AAA to tow my car to the shop. Ended up costing me like $500!!!

Could have done it myself for a lot cheaper...

4th waterpump fun!!
And the 3rd one (the one on my car now). It had a metal impellar, but it has a small crack on it, enough to notice it leaking antifreeze on my driveway. Soo, it'll be replaced this weekend.

I was just curious, how much is the average price you guys have found on your waterpumps that you replaced? I found the cheapest price online was $86.47. My friend found a reman waterpump for $56, but he's waiting for it to get to his shop to see if it has the metal impellar or not. I told him I wouldn't buy 1 without a metal impellar.

FYI, I replaced my waterpump 1 year ago. Nice.

I think my replacement waterpump was like $103. Just for the part. That was two years ago. Maybe they are cheaper now due to increased demand.
