So my passenger side mid stops working this morning. No big deal...probably a loose connection. I take the door panel off and see that one connection at the x-over has come loose. Then to my HORROR I see that there is a small tear in the surround of the mid!

Turns out that there is a small star shaped piece on the inside of the door panel that protrudes just enough to put some pressure on the edge of the surround. I had checked and thought there was enough clearance when I installed the speakers about six months ago.

Thats the link to the pic. There is a small red arrow pointing to the plastic piece that did the damage. I took a hack saw and trimmed it off.

If you have used MDF spacers to put some 6.5's in there, please be careful!

CM.

ps. Anyone know how to repair a small tear in the surround?

Good post, thanks for the info.

Sorry to hear about your speaker, though.

How thick was the MDF that you used for a spacer?

I dont think I have that mount on the door panel. If I did it would pretty much cover my 5.25 since I installed it above the tweeter in the factory location. It has been awhile since I had my panels off.

You can use black silicone (or clear) to repair the hole. I recommend trying to pacth it from the backside first. Then if need be apply some to the front. Use your finger to apply it.

I was thinking the same thing myself. I don't remember seeing any plastic within the grill oval.

Maybe it is just on the Mystique?

Found these pics of Contour door panels. They do look different than the Mystique.

I'd agree with everyone and fix it with silicone. On the other side, maybe you should sand down that star shaped thing. Also check your other door to make sure your other speaker isn't being raped, or molested by that star

I understand that the rubber cement that is used for bicycle tire repairs is perfect for the job too.

I did check the other side. Not as bad, but I can tell where its been rubbing. frown

CM.

So it pretty much rubs on the other side while the driver strokes back and forth? But it doesn't actually rip the rubber? Sounds good! laugh wink
