Ok guys... Costco has a 3000lb Aluminum Floor Jack for like $130.
My Contour weighs ~3050lbs, if I recall correctly.
Question for all you physics majors...
We all know that 3050 is greater than 3000, so the question is, assuming that I am not jacking the car up at its center of gravity, and lifting the car up from that one point, would there be an instance where having more than one wheel left on the floor still causes me to overload the 3000lb jack? Or is it always the case that the jack is NOT rated for the car?

3000lbs is more than enough. Nice and light jack too, I've been looking at it myself.

I have it. It works great, 4 pumps and the front wheels are fully off the ground, ready to be rotated.

You're fine. I don't think our Tours are 3K lb anyway. But, that doesn't matter. Unless you're lifting from the center of gravity where the jack would get the full weight of the car you're fine.. (there's no jack point at the COG anways )

My car is significantly lighter than most contours and weighs 3k lbs with driver, spare, subs, etc. CSVTs weigh over 3100lbs as well as most duratecs. Zetecs are slightly lighter, by about 40-60lbs depending on options. When I go to the strip, my car is about 2700lbs without me in it... But anyways, you're right it doesn't matter. A 3k lb jack is more than enough.
