Go for it! A very logical replacement for the Contour, as it is a sports sedan with the ability to carry four passengers and still provide tons o' driving fun. One thing I noticed about the Impreza line, though, is that the back seat is very cramped -- even compared to the Contour. The wagon is a litle bigger in back, and if you can put up with the goofy looks, is a real stealth mobile. These are great cars that are as good as their reputation.

The STi has performance that borders on the Super Car category. Great front seats, very nice dash and instruments, awe-inspiring acceleration, and incredible brakes. On the down side, it has ricey appointments (monster hood scoop, huge ironing board wing) and no sound system, so remember to budget for that.

Unlike most ricers though, that scoop has a function. Granted its just feeding the intercooler, but the Turbo does the job of ram air. The spoiler is somewhat usefull, it does have AWD so the rear wheels can benifit from some downforce.

i was reading Road and Track, and they were comparing the STi to the EVO. here is the link, judge for urself, it looked like it was a tight race between the two, but if it were me, i would also go with the STi, but they are equal competitors. just my $.02 and information contribution.

i don't remember what the fix includes but enthusiast have found a solution. whatever it is i would also consider cryogenically treating the parts.
