hi i am new to this model of car so humor me. i had posted a while back about a mystique ls sport that i was thinking of purchasing, here are the particulars: the owners have finally decided to sell. 1998 mystique ls sport 4 speed automatic 4cyl zetec motor pretty much full load except leather and sunroof. 98000kms(i am in canada) single middle age owners garage kept(i know these people quite well)this was their second car. 100% dealer maintained by the maintenance book(has every receipt)every recall done. buying price of $3500 canadian dollars Questions: 1)is this a good price for what i think is an above average condition mystique?in the classifieds and on the lot they are going for between $4500-$5500 can(with the 6cyl engine)
2)all my research(done on edmunds in the usa)says that this car should have the v6 engine not the 4cyl,am i correct or were mystique ls sports available with the 4cyl zetec/auto tranny.possibly only in canada?
3)any known trouble spots that i can easily check or have a garage check.
4)does any one know what the sport designation actually add as options ,i cannot find any info on mystique sport models on edmunds.com(or in forum search or faq's)
5)i really had my heart set on a 6cyl model but i think i might be hard pressed to find one in this good of condition for this price, other than it not having the v6 is there anything that would be an obvious deal breaker?
6)my only real concern with this car is the automatic transmission,i had a mercury sable that had the infamous front piston failure twice,is the tranny in the mystiques a different model than the axode(i think)that were in the taurus/sable models?
anyway i look forward to your answers regards, jeff

Hey!
I have a 98 Mystique LS and I loves it!
That price sounds really good to me.
Are these people sure its a Zetec engine?I'm not trying to insult them or anything but there are some people (more than you might think) who can't tell a 4 cyl from a 6 cyl (and one such person works at the Ford dealer in my town ) All the LSs I have seen have had the 6 cyl Duratec. I'm in the states though so it might be different.
As for trouble spots, if it was a Duratec you'd need to change the waterpump. I don't think the Zetecs have as high of a failure rate though.
As for the lovely CD4E transmission.....I am at 80k and have not had trouble. If well maintained, they are usually OK. Never, ever flush out a high mileage CD4E though.....bad things can happen. Draining and filling the ATX fluid is much better. What I do is this (somebody please correct me if I'm being idiotic) and yes I am a little obsessed: At one oil change I drain and fill the trannie. Because that doesn't remove all the fluid I drain and fill the trannie again at the next oil change. Then after 5 or 6 more oil changes (15-18,000 miles) I repeat the process.
Again, my words are not to be taken as gospel. That's just what works for me. Two consecutive oil changes with trannie drain/fills and then 5-6 oil changes without them.....repeat!
There is a forum on here just for transaxles and theres a lot of good information about the CD4E there.
Good luck my friend. Let us know what you decide.

I would say it is a good price, especially with repair records. You don't usually see that with dealer vehicles.

It might have a v6, the easiest way to tell is look at the tach on the instrument cluster, if it says v6, it has a v6. Now the Zetec is not bad engine either. It has quite a bit of pep.

O2's, Water Pump, timming belt and tensioners on the Zetec, ATX's. Those are pretty much the big ones.

Sport means it has a little stiffer suspension.

If you really want a v6, hold out for a v6, don't compromise on what you want. In time you will find it. It mainly depends on what your priorities are. From what you have said, this sounds like a great deal with a realiable car. But the final decision falls upon you.

The ATXs are iffy, but how you described the owners, I doubt that they abused it. Adding an external cooler and dropping in a 180 degree thermastat will help keep it going for a long time.
Whatever you decide, keep us posted and we will gladely help with any other questions.

IIRC in the later model years 98-00 you could get a sport model with the 4 banger. Check out this Link and scroll down.

CAN$3500?? Holy smoke that's cheap!
I was contemplating a 24V 98 Contour, with 95k, one owner from new for CAN$7600! It too had all the trimmings including a moon/sun roof.
Why would that be so cheap? Oh I guess it's a private sale, but to be 50% cheaper?!

$7600 CAD for a 98 Tour with 95K is way too much.

I agree that is way too much. NADA puts an SE 24v at $3750 US$.

Hey I have a 99 and its about identical to the 98, I can't imagine the car having a 4cyl????? I am in Canada as well and have never heard of a 4cyl moreso in the sport LS version. And it has to be a duratec not a Ztech, I'd say the price is right be be wary that they may have changed motors or something its the only thing that I can think of..
1999 Mystique Sport 2nd owner bought it in Sept 03 120000km 4 door, leather, loaded pics on cardomain, coatsy
