1)is this a good price for what i think is an above average condition mystique?in the classifieds and on the lot they are going for between $4500-$5500 can(with the 6cyl engine)
I would say it is a good price, especially with repair records. You don't usually see that with dealer vehicles.

2)all my research(done on edmunds in the usa)says that this car should have the v6 engine not the 4cyl,am i correct or were mystique ls sports available with the 4cyl zetec/auto tranny.possibly only in canada?
It might have a v6, the easiest way to tell is look at the tach on the instrument cluster, if it says v6, it has a v6. Now the Zetec is not bad engine either. It has quite a bit of pep.

3)any known trouble spots that i can easily check or have a garage check.
O2's, Water Pump, timming belt and tensioners on the Zetec, ATX's. Those are pretty much the big ones.

4)does any one know what the sport designation actually add as options ,i cannot find any info on mystique sport models on edmunds.com(or in forum search or faq's)
Sport means it has a little stiffer suspension.

5)i really had my heart set on a 6cyl model but i think i might be hard pressed to find one in this good of condition for this price, other than it not having the v6 is there anything that would be an obvious deal breaker?
If you really want a v6, hold out for a v6, don't compromise on what you want. In time you will find it. It mainly depends on what your priorities are. From what you have said, this sounds like a great deal with a realiable car. But the final decision falls upon you.

6)my only real concern with this car is the automatic transmission,i had a mercury sable that had the infamous front piston failure twice,is the tranny in the mystiques a different model than the axode(i think)that were in the taurus/sable models?
The ATXs are iffy, but how you described the owners, I doubt that they abused it. Adding an external cooler and dropping in a 180 degree thermastat will help keep it going for a long time.
Whatever you decide, keep us posted and we will gladely help with any other questions.
