Here's the deal...I just had a 15 inch sub and 1000 watt amp installed on my 98 Contour. This problem started before that, but it has gotten worse. When I turn on my defrosters (front or rear-rear is worse) the car idles very, very rough and almost stalls. The thing is, it only does it when Im at a dead stop; either at a red light or in park. Any ideas as to what it is or what to do? I always turn the defrosters off when I get to a light or park now, but I'd rather have it fixed.

Hey my car used to do that to, what fixed it was cleaning the TB, and UIM/LIM cleaning and having the injectors flushed, and also cleaning the MAF.

Dude, you have a zetec, how did you do an UIM/LIM cleaning?
Anyways, I replaced my coil pack, and that seemed to help a lot.

You might just get away with a tune-up. When all those accessories are on it puts a heavier load on the engine via the alternator. If the engine isn't running tip top it will cause it to bog down like you are describing. A fuel injection cleaning wouldn't hurt either. If it still continues then I'd get more serious with things like cleaning the intakes, throttle body etc. How many miles on your car? Which engine / transmission do you have? Do you have a Check Engine light on? More information will help us help you.

this is exactly what happened when the air compressor on my tour seized. any time I turned on anything that had to do with air, and was at a stop, it would idle very rough and stall at times. once the RPMs are up, it pulls the belt over the seized pulley anyways, and you don't notice the problem. after a long-ish drive with the defrosters on, stop and pup the hood. look around the left part of the bay, and check for thin smoke (the belt burning up basically).

Thanks Drew and Shotwell!
She did have a tune-up around Thanksgiving.
I will have her check and clean the items mentioned and go from there.
In case you're wondering why I posted the info. on Steph's car....She couldn't get back on to post last night as her building (at college) was flooded. She was unable to get upstairs to her room while they cleaned the building, so I posted for her. And because she's my daughter.
Thanks for the help!
