i have a 4 cylinder 95 contour w/ manual tranny. i noticed today that when i accelerate my car will slowly accelerate and then just 'shoot off' and be at normal speed. it does it while i am driving slowly each time i shift gears. but on the freeway it doesn't do it unless i have to slowdown and then pick speed up again. while i was driving on the city streets i got tired of it doing it so i just punched the gas and it got to speed but the check engine light came on and stayed on. but when i started it again the light was off. i don't know why it could be doing this.

Mine did this, then I code a CEL for the O2 sensor, replaced it and the problem was gone.

I would get the codes pulled sense you got CEL, that would point you in the right direction. Autozone pulls codes for free.
