Hello all! I've just aqcuired a '98 SVT I snagged from my brother. The first "quirk' i noticed about the car was that it seems to cruise at very high RPMs. I don't know if this is normal for these cars. I've owned 5-speed cars all my life and I've never had one that needs 3500+ RPMs to cruise at 70mph. Even my previous 4-banger celica cruised 70 at around 3000. The car has the correct size tires and other than that, seem to work fine. I'm inclined to think that this is also related to the horrible gas mileage it gives me, i'm talking about barely 20mpg highway driving. Any suggestions or comments about whether this is normal? thanks

Your RPM are correct. 60mph is about 2500rpm for me.

With the gas mileage here are a few things you can do to help it - clean MAF - new plugs/wires if more than 50,000 miles old - new fuel filter - new air filter - new PCV vavle - have the injectors flushed out professionaly - clean the throttle body and upper and lower intake manifold - repalce the O2 sensor if old - use Vavoline 10W 30 oil, it helps gas mileage, at least in my car it seems to
hope that helps

The duratech is a high revving V6... 3500 at 70-ish is cool for the little mean powerplant. I would recommend having everything that hitman said to do. But, you are lucky that you know the prior owner, so you can find out what his maintenance records were... and go from there. You snagged an aweosme car, as you will see over time. Preventive maintanence is the key to keeping that baby running awesome for years to come. My SVT is just getting started at 103,xxx miles, its had just typical maintanence...with not a SINGLE problem (accept that damn serp belt.. grrr!) Welcome aboard!

I asked the same question when I was new. The secondaries open up at 4k so think of it as resting just below the real power boost, so when you need to pass on the highway, your ready. I used to drive a Subaru Justy and the RPMs ran about the same I think, so its not that unusual.

Hey fellas, thanks for all the advice. The responses to my post ease my worries a little bit. I guess i just got used to my previous car, a 6-speed Mitsu VR-4. I will try some of the maintenance tips and see how it goes. thanks for everything.

Agreed....70mph is 3000 for me in 5th gear....80-82 (never paid close attention) sia about right for 3500 rpm in 5th.
If you doing 3500 at 70mph, then you got problems.
3.0 SVT hybrid...all the fixens...Track/Race ready very soon!!!!!! 20,000 + miles
