Anyone around here got one I could borrow? I've been getting lousy gas mileage, and the CEL FINALLY came on today (which may make me the only one ever excited by that event).

I will probably just break down and buy one, but thought I should ask first.

Thanks for any help, or even brand recommendations.

Hey there VR- welcome to CEG.

Check out the group buy section and look for the OBD-II scanner group buy. Details on this device can be found here.

Many CEGers use it and for the most part love its features and usefulness. Through the group buy, provided at least 20 people particicpate, we'd get a max of 30% off of whichever "kit" we want- we don't all have to order the same thing.

In the meantime, you can scan the code for free at any Autozone. Write down the code number(s) and refer to the FAQ to see what exactly is causing the prob.

Most people then post their newfound CEL code and any related questions (What the F*** do I do now?!) in the troubleshooting section.

**Warning**
Use the SEARCH feature before posting. Many questions have already been answered somewhere in our little patch of cyberspace.

Thanks, Chuck, I will look at the group buy.

I had read - I thought here, in fact - that the AutoZone approach wouldn't work anymore. Apparently they had gotten some sort of pressure from repair shops and weren't reading codes for people any longer.

Well, yeah, I was at the Autozone in Oakland about a month ago. They no longer read the codes for you, but they DO make OBD II readers available through their free loaner tool program. $170 deposit.

Merrick, Chuck -

Thanks to you both, but I jumped on the group buy and should have the reader next week. Might have skipped it if I'd checked the forum more frequently! Still, doubt I'll mind having it in the future.

I appreciate the offers and info, though.
