Sorry to bring up an old thread.

Having kids in the car had to freak you out.

I was always taught however, never ever attempt to aviod small animals by swerving. Just try and brake your way out of it.

I have hit a few racoons and whatnot by doing this but I stayed in my lane and never caused any damage. The worst part is getting out of the car and making sure they are dead. (crowbar works wonders) Point is its never worth risking your car, yourself , or in your case kids.
