Just saw a commercial for this, maybe I'm outta the times, but is this thing any good? I don't mind giving the car a good wash, but if it's the right price, it could be an interesting addition to my car care lineup... Comments?

It worked well for me. It auto dried just like it said it would. It also took off my wax. So, yea, it works ok, but plan on reapplying your wax.

If you decide to buy it and want to save a few $$$ go to Autozone it comes with a mail in rebate. So your final price is $14.

You need some polish in there just before the wax. A couple coats should be good.

It took off my wax as well, but it autodried just fine and was one of the best looking washes I've ever seen on a car. However, the $25 autoclean comes only with a starter kit that gives you 3 washes.
The refill soap is $7 and the refill filter is about $8-$9. For that, you get 10 washes. That's $15-16 per refill, or ~ $1.50-$1.60 per wash. However, I've found that the amount of soap they recommend you use is absolutely, horrendously excessive. You could probably make the soap refill last 20-30 washes (given the amount that I use), and thus your cost dips to about $1.00-$1.10 a wash. I have a black car, which means I typically wash my car 3 times a week at a minimum, so you can see how the costs just keep adding up.
Also, if you have hard water, it seems like the filter doesn't last as long as it says it does. I have extremely hard water here in Dallas where I live, and I got about 2-3 long washes out of my last $9 filter. I took it back to Pep Boys and demanded they replace it, though, so no worries there (maybe I got a defective one ), but aside from that I'm going to be screwed next time around if it only lasts 2-3 washes.
The bad thing is if your filter goes out in the middle of a wash, the autodry and rinse doesn't work worth a crap so all that soap you put on your car just stays on there and it takes 2 or 3 hard rinses to get it all off. If you don't get it all off, it makes your paint look extremely dull and completely destroys the clean and finished look of your car until you do.
My 2 cents..

What is it that strips the wax? Is it the soap or something else? Could you substitute another soap?

I just use the unfiltered water to rinse the soap off and then spray it with the autodry rinse. I haven't had any problems with spotting and I think I might even manage more that 3 washes out of the original filter. I have already used it twice and there isn't even a hint of "brown" in the filter.

Maybe the Pep Boys I went to is whack. My filter was brown to start with All of their filters were brown..
Do you take the thing off the hose and rinse that way ?

Ya Tim, this definitely is catching my eye, as I also have an extremely black contour... cursed love hate relationship with that paint. I'll pick this up soon as my pocketbook allows it, along with a new claybar and polish. Thanks for the info guys, and not newbie bashin here, as I know detailing posts are abound in the search databases. - Chris
