Brother came over today and wanted to try out my ride. Took it out for a drive to see how it handled. I have a '97 tour LX with a duratec and a 5 speed. We took it out and wound it out a bit to see what it could do taking it up to redline for a short period. 5 minutes max. As we were driving up to the house I noticed a smell in the cabin..electrical?? smelled wierd. Looked at the temperature gauge and it was peaked. I thought right away it was the water pump. We were only 2 blocks from the house so we brought it home and turned it off immediately. Coolant was boiling and leaking down the right side wheel. It seems like a simple overheating issue. Twenty minutes later I turned it on and the temp gauge was holding low.
My question is.. Water pump? I know this has been covered extensively in the forums but this is new to me and I want to be sure. Maybe the thermostat? Its Good Friday so Ill be taking it in tomorrow.

Turn on the heater. If you don't get heat=water pump. Should replace t-stat and wp at the same time anyway.

Waterpump on the V6 is notorious for dying. Replace it, flush the coolant system, and hope you didnt do any perminant dammage.

$800 CDN so far. Pump, Serp, thermostat. Possibly more to come. That reasonable?

kinda high for just a water pump job.... lets see if can
= 75 % of american then its 75% of $800 = $600. must be by the dealer?? i put one in my 96 V-6 and the whole water pump with hoses attached were like $120 from dealer, a thermostat $15.00 if you need a new belt that should not be more than $40 if its the belt on the passenger side for the alt. crankshaft, etc. to get to the water pump you got to take out the battery, battery tray, to have enough room to get the old one out and the new one in...should not cost you more than $350-$400 US... i think some places look up their prices from the book and say, Lets see:

1 belt, open the hood, let engine cool take off old belt
put on new belt..
2 water pump, open the hood, let engine cool.. remove battery, then the tray,,,

3- thermostat, open hood, let engine cool...etc..
it seems that they probably double up on the time for labor when doing several things that are mixed into the original
time of doing each job.... that will bring up profits for the shop...

Do it yourself there is a detailed how-to on the site. Even if you dont have the tools buy them, you will still save money but not bringing it in, plus you will have some nice tools.

What about the timing belt/tensioner, you might as well have them replace it since they have to remove it anyways.
