Okay, there obviously not many escort people on this board. That model escort is not related to the Euro escort at all but is actually a thinly disguised Mazda 323/Protege. At least the GT is powered by the 1.8 liter DOHC Mazda BP series motor. In Japan and elsewhere they had a turbocharged version of this engine called the BPT. You can buy these from www.corksport.com. BPTs slot right in and have 180 BHP stock. With mild tuning you can get this into the mid 200s, with serious tuning, the sky is the limit. I think a used engine costs under $1500 and they take very well to mods.

No, it doesnt have a Duratec, its a 1.8L 130Hp engine on the GT. If I were you, I would take the Scort, drive it for a while and save some cash, then with the extra cash buy a really nice SVT tour, or a Cheep one with low miles and mod it with the extra cash you saved.

I still say throw in a Mazda 1.8l BPT and a good suspension and it will really scoot. I had a 1.6l B6T powered 323 GTX and without too many crazy mods was putting a lot more power to the ground than I do with my CSVT and with several hundred pounds less to haul around. Of course the car was also AWD so it was dynamically better than any US escort could ever be but it is still a great series of engines when turbo's are applied.

I owned a 91 Escort GT. It was an ATX w/1.8l 16v engine. Of course I owned the car from 95-99, but during that time I really loved the car. The only problems I had were the tranny (don't forget ATX), & the timing belt. This was only my second car ever so I drove it pretty hard, but I was religious about oil changes & tune ups. The only thing I really didn't like was the fact that when you hit the brakes it really liked to lock up the front end . Anyway, I say drive it & see what you think.
