At least the GT is powered by the 1.8 liter DOHC Mazda BP series motor. In Japan and elsewhere they had a turbocharged version of this engine called the BPT. You can buy these from
www.corksport.com. BPTs slot right in and have 180 BHP stock. With mild tuning you can get this into the mid 200s, with serious tuning, the sky is the limit. I think a used engine costs under $1500 and they take very well to mods.
