I've got a alumapro 8" sub (damn good speaker) that I will custom install into the rear deck with a sealed enclosure I believe it is 200rms 250peak and I'm thinking about running a kenwood amp that is bridgable to 380x1 @ 4 ohm is this a ok combination or just plain insane?

Which do you like better? Speaker or Amp?
The one you like better, you need to buy a component that will match up.

You should be ok, but you will have to be careful when adjusting the gain.

The more power the better:). keep the gain low and you'll get cleaner sound than buying a amp and have to crank the gain and get distortion

Too much power is the only way you can blow speakers. Too much isn't always the best scenario.

The ONLY way to blow speakers? Under powering can also "blow" your speakers. And by the more power the better, i meaning realisticly, not like putting 1000watts rms to a 100 watt sub. But usually the more the better since you can turn the gain down and get less distortion.

And also keep in mind that the Kenwood is probably rated at 14.4V.

It depends on what ohm rating the sub is. If it is a different ohm rating you won't get the full power out of the amp. Chances are you are not getting 380watts to the sub.

Don't argue with Dave, it always results in Dave making people look like idiots laugh Clipping and distortion will not affect the speaker unless it is getting too much power supplied to it, otherwise it will do no damage to the speaker. Clipping and distortion might affect the amp but not your speakers (again, unless there is too much power being supplied) smile

Clipping heats up the speakers voice coil, and will eventually open it up. So underpowering a speaker MAY blow it.
