I've had some Mazda 626 owners tell me that it was $900 and up to replace their timing belts. Count your blessings.

That charge for them to do it is crazy. It shouldn't be much over $200, under at some places just for belt change. Though yeah, it's a good idea to get pulleys,h2o pump, and tensioner done at same time. And those prices for the parts are fine.

Yeah I agree. Those charges are outrageous. It's really not that hard a job now that I've really gotten my hands in it. And I know very little about car repair.

There's nothing to regulate the predatory nature of garages. You just have to be on gaurd. Always. That's why I don't use garages unless I'm really desperate. Even in that case when I get the estimate I usually get AAA to pull the sucker out'a'there and bring it home...

The repairs I've had to do so far are always alot easier then they sound... for me it just takes a little time and patience. And luckily my friend is a professional mechanic.

see, the thing is, most auto shops dont "know" the specific job offhand. they just check in their big manual that shows the job and gives an estimated time to complete it.

so, you cant really blame them for being overpriced, since they really dont know what the job entails until theyve gotten everything broken apart to see exactly what its going to take.

and, most shops will give an extra .5-1 hour over just to make sure they have time to complete everything (if something wrong were to occur).

so, still I think that price is reasonable, considering its a time consuming job....and everybody knows...time is money.

UPDATE:

PEPBOYS gave me crap parts.

1. Water pump is defective. Holes were not drilled properly... they're a bit offset.

2. Timing belt is slightly too large. (according to Ford and my mechanic, many aftermarket timing belts for this car don't fit correctly.)

Doing what I should have done... getting parts from Ford. Who knows, maybe the ford parts are even made in America...

One can dream...

It took me a while to figure it out.....
Ford part fit correctly, always....But you pay for it
Jobber parts fit most of the time....and are cheaper.
