Hi. I just read, "Timing Belt Break: What to Expect for Repairs/Cost?" on the forums. My timing belt just snapped at 125,000 miles. PepBoys wanted $450.00 for the job. That's just for the timing belt! Not the water pump or the pulleys! I said no way and am having a friend do it. I bought the parts at Pepboys since I was alread there... Timing Belt $30, Water Pump $70. Water Pump came with no bolts! Timing Belt came with ZERO pulleys.

Had to order pulleys from dealer for $130 for 2 idler pulleys and 1 tension pulley.

Am I getting ripped off here?

thats to be expected....belts never come with the pulley's or tensoners.

they reconmend you change them (especially with high miles on the original ones) but its not nessicary in some cases.

did the 450 price included the pulley's and tensoners...or was that just he belt and labor?

Ok... cause I read in the archives that the dealer usually sells the belt and pulleys together. That post was also from 2002... so...

$450 for just labor and timing belt... I asked them...

Keep in mind I know next to nothing about this stuff... learning as I go..

Thanks.

No problem....but next ime compare the dealer service with the pep boys.....and ask wahts in cluded with each and compare....you'd be surpries and what is included and whats not.....and usualy not muach is included.

And for the water pump most people reuse the old bolts.....but new ones you have to get speratly.

do change the pullies with the timing belt, my tensioner was about to split in half at 104k, and the plastic was rather worn

all said in done without a water pump it was around $300 in parts from the dealer

make sure you also get the tensioning spring to set the tension on the tensioner

Thanks.

THe problem with not having the bolts is that the old bolts are actually too small for the new "Bosch" water pump.

yeah man, i would be sort of happy with that price (if i werent a DIY'er) considering most other cars are MUCH more expensive.

the cheapest price I was quoted for timing chains on my 98 gti vr6 was $980 parts and labor. and that wasnt at the dealer. it is usually a very long and PITA type of job.
