I'm going to be in the market for a pickup, must be < 10K, 4x4, room for kid(s), unique. I'm leaning towards a '96 f150 eddie baurer edition extended cab...any opinions on engine options or general comments? Thanks...

You can get 97's in EXT cab 4x4 for under $10K. I like that body style much more, but hey, its your green.

Most 96's should have that fixed. if they're not talk to a local dealer adn see what can be done (I beleive it was recalled or a TSB)
Personally I like the 5.4 better then the 4.6. But both are fairly good engines, not too many issues that I'm aware of (the 5.4 is a gas hog btw). Don't look to mcuh at the Eddie Bauer if you're just looking for a truck, the more goodies it has just means that there's more goodies to break adn fix. I think that there are 97's and 98's that are probably goign for the same price. Also may want to look at what you'll really use the 4x4 for. 2 wheel drive will save substantially on the gas and much cheaper to fix/insure. Good luck

The 96s have a TSB out because the 97s have side exhaust? I am very confused.

OOPS! Sorry thinking about it later, I realized that he was looking at a 96 not the newer generation model that was released in 96/97. My bad, The Eddie Bauer edition should be a dead give away that it was the older boxy style.
The 97 F150 (newer style I believe) Had side exhaust that was mounted before the rear wheel. THis caused some fairly severe corrosion on the wheels. This was fixed by moving the exhaust behind the rear wheel in later models and I believe was repaired under warranty by most dealers.
Came with a 302 or 351 (Eddie Bauer I think had the 351) Lots of goodies but compared to the newer design is quite old feeling. If you don't mind that and wnat more of a truck like truck that's for you.

I like the pre-97 trucks better. The 96 that you are looking at will still have either the 300 6-cyl, or the 302 v8, or the 351 v8. I like the Windsor, small block V8's in those better then the 4.6/5.4 engines found in the 97-up f150. You can use a lot of Mustang bolt on, go-fast parts on the pre-97 trucks. I knew a guy who had a 95 Eddie Bauer with a 302 with a few mods in it that would kill most stock GT Mustangs all day long, and he still had room for the kids, and could tow his boat!

I am beginning to think I could have gotten a whole lot more for my '99 F-150 I sold last June to my father in law. A loaded Lariat 4x4 Supercab with 69k miles for $12.5k.
I highly recommend a 99+ 5.4L as they got the improved heads with more power. And you can get a 3.73 gear too.

As much as I love Turds, I wouldn't buy any of the newer trucks. Chevy's beat them in every category from comfort to relability to power. My personal opinion would be to find a Z71 Ext cab and you wouldn't need to look anymore. It's a luxury 4x4 as far as 4x4's are concerned and find one with a 350 in it and it's very reliable. Plus, aftermarket is very cheap and you can do alot more to a 350 than almost any other small block on the market except maybe the Ford 302.

Went to the DC auto show this year and sat in the Chevy and Ford back to back and the Ford won hands down!
