You're right, both have valid points. A majority of the heat would be transferred directly to the heat sinks. Most amp mfgs do not recommend mounting them upside down. That tells me there is "enough" of a danger to warrant not using this method.

Old - 95.5 SE with lot's of mods.
New - 98 Black SVT with few mods.
