haven't read the entire thread, but to respond to the first post, i recently ran some numbers and job outsourcing has contributed to less than 1% in uneployment in the last 3 or 4 years due the US having very high net exports of high-end services to other countries. glad to see things on the upswing. the real estate market should only be a couple years behind.

OOPS. Now Sen. Lugar agrees we have a mess on our hands in Iraq and he's dissappointed the Bush administration does not really have a plan, and so needs extra time to develop one.

Lugar's perplexed Bush blundered in like an idiot. JaTo, I guess you know better than Lugar how Bush was so poised and wise to jump on an easy kill.

How long have you chaired the foreign relations committee now, JaTo?

And what's Bush doing now to stabilize Africa, since the terrorists will go there to set up shop after that plan of Bush's which you admire so much turns the middle east all democractic and pro-western?

If you're going to resort to asking for credentials, where's yours?

Oh, and how about answering the question posed to you twice already?

Just more spin and hype that Mr. Bush is trying to keep implanted in people's brains.

I do belive unemployment numbers come from those who are receiving unemployment benefits. If you've been on unemployment for so long, and you're no longer eligable for benefits, you're not "counted" as unemployed.

outsourcing was a relatively minor contributing factor to US job loss

Agreed, but we're still loosing great jobs. Factory workers, farmers, ENGINEERS, physicists, chemists, etc are all loosing their jobs due to outsourcing. Americans simply cannot compete with India, Tialand, Tiawan, China, etc when it comes to CHEAP LABOR.

We need help.

I meant to write "someone please correct me if I'm wrong" on this, as I would really like to know how unemployment is "counted."

Hello Packrat. We're honored by your contribution. As usual.

JaTo is a big boy. Are you now his mouthpiece? Yeah, you're a little bit like the guy in the Wendy's commercials. But Packrat, you're more like good ol' Joe Isuzu.

JaTo asked for substance. He wouldn't accept it from me. But he got it from Sen. Lugar today instead. Loud and clear.

Way to keep up with the news, Packrat. Or would you call Sen. Lugar a right wing nut so you can ignore him too? Be my guest. This site likes right wing nuts.

Oh. And "Welcome to Wal Mart."

Depends on the source. In Macroeconomic terms "Unemployed" means you do not currently have a job and are actively looking to get a job. If you are not receiving unemployment benefits and are actively looking for a job, you are still counted.

If you are receiving benefits, you are assumed to be actively looking, as looking for a job is normally a condition of unemployment benefits.

The official percentage is estimated by taking those receiving benefits and applying a modifier (part of the "seasonally adjusted") to it to account for other job seekers.

You are no longer considered unemployed if you are not receiving benefits and have given up on trying to find a job. You are then not considered part of the workforce.

Keep in mind the macroeconomic standard for "natural unemployment" is 4-6%. Natural unemployment is that caused by people relocating, entering the workforce, and changing careers.

Thanks for the info, James. One more Q - is there a time limit, per se, as to how long you can receive unemployment benefits?

I don't know what the limit is. There have been some extensions, but I do not know if they were targeted to certain groups or to any unemployed worker.

I believe the standard limit is 26 weeks. This may also vary from state to state.
