And, as I mentioned in that thread, their letter whitewashed the situation. The impression I got was that unless there are obvious bare wires under the hood, nothing is wrong. Did that guy really think that the dealer was going to tell me that the harnesses needed to be replaced when nothing was obviously wrong? I'm sure that, had I made enough noise, I could have gotten them to replace the harnesses, but I thought only some cars were built with the wrong insulation, not all of them, and the assumption I made was that if the harness wasn't cracking it was going to be fine. WRONG. My '96 doesn't have any obvious cracking, but I'm going to raise hell with the dealer until they replace the harnesses on it. Brian Originally posted by MystiqueSVT:
Wow...what a jerk! Ford knew all along about this issue and kept it hidden knowing full well when most found out about the recall, it would be too late....as in my case!!

Brian, One recommendation about the recall I can give you is take out your battery and look at your positive battery terminal wiring. Mine was completely corroded off. If you show them this they have on choice but to replace it as that's in the recall documentation.
Also as far as My IAT connector goes it looks like the one you have a pictue of. Not exaclty like it but very close. Is there a place that I can get a pigtail assmebly or do I need to go to Ford for this?

I don't know of any place that you'd be able to get a pigtail for that other than the wrecking yard.
The Ford dealer is going to want a part number for the connector sleeve; getting the terminals is another can of worms.
If the connector sleeve isn't damaged but the terminals are, they MAY be able to find replacements in the 4-box kit (they come with 4" of wire pre-attached, for splicing into the harness).
They'll need a terminal to match it up, though...

For all those who have this issue with the underhood wire harness, I encourage you to go here The NHTSA has the power to force auto manufacturers to do a recall with no cost to the consumer if they get enough complaints. I have filled out a form and I suggest all on this board do the same.

Spoke with 2 Ford mechanics at the Tallahassee autocross who said that wiring harnesses are a known problem on V-6 Contours. They brought it up, not me.
On a positive note, they had good things to say about the Focus. Maybe early teething problems. But I did hear the whole story about their guy who rolled a Focus at our divisional event in 2000. In a steady state turn and car left the ground completely, landing on roof and then on opposite side. Guy was trying to do a class-action lawsuit and then tried to hit Ford up for racing sponsorship. Don't know if he was stupid or just trying to blackmail them.

Maybe we need a website set up specifically for information about this problem? Searching for "ford contour wiring cracking" on google doesn't get anything related, and there is not much information about this problem on the net at all. You will see 15 consumer complaints. 1996=8 complaints. 1997=3 complaints. Now type in the same for a 1995 Contour. You will get 39 complaints. 1996=9 complaints 1997=7 complaints. Most of these complaints had fires associated with them. If you search a little further...you will find all kinds of information. I cannot stress more strongly the fact that everyone needs to do this. Maybe Lance will help us out by getting a special link or page together.

okay dumb quiestion time: is the underhood wiring harness the 'only' one referred to as 'wiring harness'??? the reason i ask is that i was reading over my warranty info last nite and came across under covered items, THE WIRING HARNESS!!! and if also says that if they cover something thta is also covered by ford or should be that they will either pay for the repairs needed and/or go after ford to reimburse them...
95 contour se...dark blue...monsterflow air filter...remanuf atx...wiring harness recall or bust!!!96k miles...motorcraft awsf32pp plugs & red ford racing 9mm wires...kvr black plated cross-drilled rotors & carbon fiber pads...currently undergoing renovation...excuse our dust!!! are my dodgers for real????

A wiring harness is an assembly of wires, designed to connect multiple circuits.
By that definition, almost every wire in your car is part of a harness.

Does this apply to that battery wires too? The insulator on mine is stripped... What should I tell those service people at the dealership when I go there?
