If you want a cheap project, find an older RX-7 and drop a Ford or Chevy V8 into it. 12's for under $5k.
please don't just build up the rotary

If you converted to RWD and did it yourself it wouldn't cost that much. Rear end can be had from a junkyard, materials are cheap. The hard thing is the engineering of the motor trans remounting and the rear suspension. It would be a tough fun job for a DIYer/fabricator. I have a friend that wants me to convert his cougar to AWD with an x type drivetrain. It would be fun..but a PITA

really off the subject, but i was reading an article about an rx-7 with a SR20 in it. doesn't that ruin the point of an rx-7?
Just wondering.

As I read through this, I wondered how long before the x type came up. I don't see a reason not to do it. I couldn't afford it as of today, but I also can't afford the bmw 3 series I want. Think about the guy that said ...I'm gonna put a CHEVY (GM, totally not suitable for a Mazda) engine and tranny in my RX-7. Tell me he didn't get chastised.
I get so tired of everyone on here getting attacked because they have an idea that is a little different and out there. We have electricity in nearly every home in america now. Thomas Eddison saw that one coming, and you can blame a few crazy engineers for the box you're sitting in front of now as stated by an IBM spokesperson ...Computers will never be used in the home, they're far too expensive and large.
I say save your pennies and go for it. Your car is for you, not for these flamers and doubters.
God graced us with intelligence, let's use it.

I think if anyone had the real intention of doing it, they'd be doing it and not be on here posting about dreaming about doing it.
