glad I read this before I threw back on my lower intake, We were looking at how pathetic my wires looked due to being brittle and cracking all over the place, so tomm. I will have to give the dealership a lil ring on the tele and tell him whats up, and see if I will be able to get the replacements, cause Im only at 65,000 miles

If that's the case then how do painless wiring and centech make engine/fuel injection harnesses for the Ford Mustang?

I have to admit, this issue really bugs me. Make a component from a poor material choice (PVC insulation), then shaft and screw customers with an incredibly ridiculous price when it fails later on (after the 100K extended warranty).

This issue has really got me thinking ....

Qaz, The wire broke at the connector. I removed the wire and attempted to resolder the connector back on. At that time the other wire broke. I removed both and either the solder joint on one of the wires is not correct or I put them back in reversed. The computer is saying that the IAT Circuit is to High. SO I thought replacing the whole connector assmebly would correct the error all toghter. Thanks in advance.

IAT circuit too high?

That wouldn't be caused by the IAT being unplugged or hooked up wrong, I don't think...

Do you have a digital multimeter?

If so, check the voltage on the two IAT connector pins to ground. One should be about 5V and the other should be 0V or very close to it.

If you get any other voltages, that might be the problem...

Oh, one other possibility is that your IAT wires are shorted (maybe at the connector?). That would definently cause it to read high.

If you have a '96 or newer with the different IAT, you MIGHT be able to replace it with a pigtail and the '95 IAT. I'm pretty sure the resistance specs are the same.

SMP's part number for a coolant temperature sensor pigtail is S-612 -- the connector shell I think is different but the terminals are the same as the intake air temperature sensor, so you can pop the wires/terminals out of the shell and re-use your old one if you have a '95 Contour. If not I can post the engineering number off of mine so that your dealer can order a shell for you.

The IAT doesn't care how it's hooked up, it's just a resistor that changes resistance with temperature.

Sorry...I keep forgetting to tell you which year car I have. It's a 1997 Zetec. The IAT I have off the 95 is the Duratec on that plugged into the air box.

Wow...what a jerk! Ford knew all along about this issue and kept it hidden knowing full well when most found out about the recall, it would be too late....as in my case!! mad

I'm not sure what connector that IAT used--it's probably either the new-style made by AMP that resembles something like this:

Or it uses the previous style of connector as the '95 Duratec used. It's possible that you can use a '95 Zetec IAT along with the pigtail...these AMP connectors, while industry-standard parts, aren't widely available it seems...you might be able to get a free one from AMP as an "engineering sample" (you'll have to match up the keying with the drawings on their website to get the right one).

I'm guessing here, but Ford generally likes to use the same connectors for the same type of sensor through all of their car lines.
