What is the rattling/knocking noise that i hear when the car is trying to pull up a hill or trying to speed up sometimes. It sounds like its coming from the bottom end. Iknow it cant be no bearings. The car only has 32k on it. Why does it make that sound. Oh yeah i have an automatic if that helps.

Have you tried a higher octane gasoline?? Could it be your CV joints?
You shouldn't have any noises like that. I also have a 1999 SE with a V-6. Just ran it in the mountains last weekend - no noises.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

This is something my Contour does too. Occasionally under hard acceleration loads, especially if I jab the throttle, I'll get a little low clattering noise, it sounds like the valves are slapping or something. Its a very curious noise. I wouldn't worry about it though. When I was in California this summer, we had a Crown Vic that had the same problem, and it manifested itself every time we left the hotel parking garage. The car itself was really low miles, and even though it was a rental, it was very new, so I don't think its a maintenance problem.

Guys, knocking & pinging is a bad thing. Get a load of good gasoline & see if the problem goes away. You don't want to ignore this kind of thing for too long.

What he said......try higher octane gasoline, like the 89 octane and see if it goes away. Detonation will eventually burn valves and/or pistons.......verrry bad.....

i dont think that its anything serious i was just wondering why it makes that sound. my dad bought a brand taurus and it makes the same noise. you can hear it more from the passenger side window. it sounds like its low onthe bottom. it goes away once your rpms go up pretty good. i dont notice it doing it all the time.

A tank of 93 octane will cost an extra $2 or so. Try it, PLEASE.

I noticed today that it does it when you hit the gas enough to speed up ut not change gears in the tranny and when it changes it stops. Like i said i dont think its a big prob. i was just wondering what the noise is from.

What you describe is making the engine "lug" just a bit because you're calling for acceleration in the same gear. The engine rpm's drop which causes it to have to work harder and makes it ping a little. If you'd just put in 1 tank of mid grade (89 octane) gas, as stated previously, I think you'd notice the problem would go away. The higher octane gas burns just a little more evenly which causes fewer hotspots within the cylinder. Hotspots are the cause of the detonation(pinging) because they cause uncontrolled burning of the richer fuel/air mixture in those areas. At least I think that's how I remember reading on the subject years ago. Just try it and let us know how it turns out.
