Type F was specified for '95, and Mercon for '96 and above. According to what I've read, there are no hardware differences in the steering system, so I don't see any problems. When I did a flush, I had to use my Haynes manual in lieu of a regular manual, and they specify type F for all years. They've been known to make mistakes, though. You could always go overkill and put in Mobil 1 ATF
If in doubt, use Mercon.
