It's been awhile since I've had to post a messager needing help or insight, and it's too late to knock on wood.

Here's the situation:

After a 45 minute ride of highway driving I parked my 1998 2.5 SE with ATX in the driveway. When I tried to leave about an hour later my 'tour wouldn't budge.

Reverse=Nothing
Neutral=Nothing
Drive=Nothing
Second=Nothing
First=Nothing

Even in Neutral the car cannot be rolled. This is important because I am parked very close to my garage (no room to go forward at all)

Some background info:

In January of 02 I had the car in the shop to have the transmission solenoid valve and related parts replaced. I think this was the 1-2 bang problems I have seen in posts on this forum.

CEL has been on for awhile for some minor stuff. Maybe this problem snuck in there too.

I welcome any thoughts or insight!

If you can't move the car, when you shift into drive do you feel the atx engage?

When you feel the atx engage, if you give a LITTLE gas does it want to move, do you feel the car lurch? Are you sure your emergency brake is fully release ( I know dump question but you never know) If everything looks ok, the only other item I can think of that would keep your car from rolling when it is in neutral is the parking pawl shift lever in the trans has fallen off. You can switch gears but the pawl is locked - this is a far stretch....Did they remove your trans to rebuild it? If so then they may have not tightened this down.

Again, these are some suggestions to check.......

Regards,
Bob

I agree with bt on his assement of your situation. I might have a few idea's on this as well, let us know what you find on the parking pawl. I hope that is all it is.

Well, I must have had to wait for the planets to align perfectly or something. But I finally got enough light (with the help of halogens hanging over the engine compartment and my mini maglite coming up to see that low and behold the cable was broken. I feel like a dumb A$$!
I still couldn't pop it into neutral though. Is there some quirk that doesn't allow this? My next concern is trying to figure out if it was just time for the cable to break (130,000+ miles) or if there is something wrong internally that caused this.
When I think of tranny problems I immediately think big bucks, and my hysteria got in the way of logically and methodically checking everything from the shifter to the tranny before I freak out.

Anybody have an idea the transmission cable costs?

Congrats on your cable problem......this is an excellent solution to your problem vs internal tranny problems....

If your trying to shift the lever on the trans by hand, you may have pressure on the pawl making it hard to take out of park. Never heard of the cable breaking, but heck I wish mine broke and that, that was the problem with my tranny!!!!!
