Autozone can't pull ECT.
Get a lower temp thermostat (helps a little), change coolant and if you live in the right environment, use a bit more water than antifreeze, and pour some water wetter in.

Already got the 180 thermostat on order at zxtuner.com Getting cooling system flushed this week too.
Just want to make sure I'm not overlooking the obvious.
So, to have the temp read from the ECU/EEC, you need an OBDII scan tool or go to a dealer/repair shop that can read it ?

At the wrecking yard I noticed a resistor on the fan shroud casing on the drivers side about 4 inches from the actual fan. Is this resistor for the low speed operation of the fan? Do contours have a low speed function for the radiator fan? If so maybe this is why our fans don't seem to turn on until the a or l of normal on the temp gauge because maybe the resistor is burned out. I haven't actually checked a wiring diagram to see if this is true but if it is we should start checking those resistors to see if they are burned out. Anyone want to verify/deny this?

Yeah the relays/resistors can mess up. I use obd2 software to make sure mine are working right (can turn each fan on separately).

I think the "resister" that you're seeing is the recall piece that Ford installed to help prevent the fans from catching fire. If your car had the recall done they may have either replaced the fan if it was bad and installed that resister OR if your fan was fine they would just install the resister.

Just bought a 98 Contour GL/2.0L, auto tranny with 91K. Car runs fine and feels strong considering the mileage. The water pump and thermostat housing and parts around it appear to be new/replaced. No leaks around the motor or any of the cooling system parts/hoses.
Issue: Temp gauge sits around the L in NORMAL after about 10-15 minutes of driving after initial startup. Goes down to A from time to time on the highway or steady driving.
The cooling fans appear to work and the car seems fine but I want to make sure I'm not over looking anything.
1. 98Mistake, did you get your issue resolved ?
2. Does any auto parts store do a free read of the ECU to check the actual temp of the car ?
After reading some threads, I'm wondering if it's just the temp gauge giving me a "false" HOT reading...
Any suggestions are welcome.
The temp gauge sender should always be suspect for high or low temp readings. You would know if your car was overheating even if you didn't have a temp gauge. The gauge sender is less than $20.00 and is very common to go bad. I'm reading WAY TOO MANY people changing all sorts of parts because of what the gauge reading shows and no other symptoms. If the only sign you are getting of overheating is coming from the gauge reading, change the sensor first. It's cheap. Go for the sensor.

Sender... it's a sensor, but called sender (sensor for temp gauge) .

Well.. all stores tend to get these things mixed.
For my car it was "Temperature Switch/Sender" found under the Switches section of Advanceautoparts.com
On my car the right part was listed under the 97's. I don't know why, my guess is because it was an early 98 model car?
Was listed as "Sending Unit" GP Sorensen TSU183
I've seen so many types of tempurature senders it would be best to look at your real good before buying any parts. You can normally tell by looking at the connection end what sender part it is. On mine I had a locking wire and 2 tabs on the side. On other cars there is just one plastic tab in the center.
