Type F fluid, is an obsolete ATF and is more slippery than Mercon/Dexron. It has no friction modifiers that give Mercon more "bite" to the clutches.
Since the later Contours use Mercon I would say you would not have any problems in your car.
I use Synpower PS fluid in my 96 which requires type F and have seen no ill effects.
I also use Lubeguard PS fuid additive, which is purported to be quite good - look at their website to find more info.
