getting a new head unit and speakers is good, but an aftermarket amp will help drive the speakers.
cuz the head unit doesnt produce the 50x4 it says.
if u add the amp, your speakers will be louder cuz there's more power. (obviously) u can get some cheap amps, i cant think of any of them though. any amp that runs 50-100wattts x4 will do just fine

Did you bypass the factory amp when you installed your Nak HU?[/b]
Of course I did. When I reinstalled the factory HU I went back through the amp as I dont beleive the stock HU has enough power without it. smile

Last week I just got around to installing my new speakers and man what a difference. I then out of curiosity I removed the Nak and reinstalled the factory HU, it still sounded great. The stock speakers are the biggest joke I've ever seen. They are made out of PLASTIC! The frames are plastic and they have no tweeter, only a whizzer cone. They are the cheapest things I've ever seen. I can not beleive Ford has the balls to call this crap a PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM! frown laugh
Finally got the speakers installed, eh? I was wondering when you were going to get that done! smile [/b]
Yeah Dave I finally got around to doing it over the memorial day weekend. Theres just not enough time in my day to get the things done that I need to, so the really important things take precedence! By the way the speakers you helped me pick out are FANTASTIC!! By the way this car is by far the most difficult car to install speakers in that I have ever seen in my life. So many wonderfull engineering and design features that helped make that day and a half one of the most horrific days of my life! THANK YOU FORD!!

I most certainly agree with you! After I had installed the speakers I was begining to feel good about the sound, it certainly blew the stock PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM[heavy, heavy sarcasm!] away. Then I installed the amp. While setting in the car sweat soaked from head to toe, blood flowing freely from my numbed fingers a smile began to come upon my face. If I were asked to help do this job on another Contour would I do it? HELL NO!!! But I am glad now that I done it to mine. Now all I need to do is construct some sort of amp rack and get a real nice enclosure for the Lambda. In my mind these should be far easier jobs to perform than what I've already been through, but that remains to be seen. laugh

how come the HU says it makes 50x4? If it doesn't make that, then how do u know an amp will? A HU basically contains an amp anyways. I know you still have to match ohms from HU up to speaker. mine are both 4.

The 50x4 rating is peak, not RMS. It will only produce the 50 watts for a very short period of time(usually less than a second). Reputable amplifier makers will rate their amps in continuous power (RMS)using (IIRC) the EIA-J standard. Companies like Rockford even include a tested power output for that amp. Kinda like a dyno for your amp! Remember, not all HUs include an amp, most high end units are pre outs only!

To get back on topic, a system is only going to sound as good as it's source. Feed speakers crap, get crappy sound. Start with a good, clean source, then work your way up from there!
