Can anyone make some recommendations for upgrading the door speakers in my 99 SVT 'tour? Don't need a super loud or bassy set-up, just want to hear a little bettter with the moonroof open, windows down, and zipping down the highway. Am considering the Pioneer TS-a6867 or Kenwood KFC6808, both are available for about $60.00/pr. Thanks

You'd probably notice a better improvement by swapping out your head unit with a nice aftermarket deck (and stock amp bypass).

The stock speakers are alright when driven by a nice aftermarket deck. It's the crappy factory amp with its high distortion and low power output that's the problem, which will still exist with a speaker swap.

But, if you've already swapped out the HU and performed the factory amp bypass or you just want the factory deck, either speaker you suggested would be fine. I'd probably choose the more efficient of the two if you're running them with the stock HU/amp.

I have the Pioneer 6857 which are 2 ways, just guessing the 6867's are probably 3 ways. The 2-ways sound good and have a good range. Since they handle 50 watts RMS they matched my 50wattx4 sony head unit. I would recommend upgrading head unit and speakers, because you would probably either over-power stock speakers(22 watt RMS) or underpower aftermarket speakers. Check out efficiency and what wattage they are. Higher efficiency can run on lower watts. Match up speakers with head unit, so they're not under/over powered. Need more advice? Talk to someone at a electronics/audio store and go to www.crutchfield.com , though don't buy from them(too expensive).

Having just gone through this very thing I would say do the speakers first. I put a Nakamichi HU in my car first through the stock speakers. There was absolutaly NO difference in sound qaulity! Last week I just got around to installing my new speakers and man what a difference. I then out of curiosity I removed the Nak and reinstalled the factory HU, it still sounded great. The stock speakers are the biggest joke I've ever seen. They are made out of PLASTIC! The frames are plastic and they have no tweeter, only a whizzer cone. They are the cheapest things I've ever seen. I can not beleive Ford has the balls to call this crap a PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM! frown laugh

Did you bypass the factory amp when you installed your Nak HU?

Premium speakers are same as normal speakers. What is the purpose of dual cones? Powered tweeters make sense, but dual cones just seem like a waste of material.

Hey, thanks to all contributors for your opinions. I do intend to upgrade the HU as well, and wondered which to do first. Last complete install I did was in a '76 Camaro when it was new, so I've got some catching up to do.
