I have a 98 SE, V6 with power steering and need some advice. When I drive my car out of a parking lot and turn the steering wheel, there can be a pronounced "clunking" noise from the steering column. I don't get this noise when the car gets up to speed and the steering works fine. But, I sure don't like noises coming from the steering column and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. Any comments would be much appreciated.

Do you feel the clunk?

I know that the front sway bar can actually move to the left or right of center, and when the wheels are turned, and you hit a bump, or grade just right you'll hear a clunk, or a squeak sound.

One way to check is to remove the front wheel(s) and look around the sway bar link/upper cross member/lower cross member area, see if you see any shiny metal surfaces which would indicate rubbing. Nothing should be shiny on the cars underside..

Besides that, it could be a strut, or you may have a loose connection point in your power steering rack.

Good luck!

Thanks for your comment Nate'sTour. I am barely moving when I hear the clunk so it could be the connection point. I like your "quote".
