Not sure what's going on, but I saw those signs yesterday too. If you want to avoid 290 take the Mass Pike all the way to 495. The toll will be a little more, but you will skip 290 entirely.

If you drive 290 between the Pike exits and Worcester you'll notice a funky construction zone where the passing lane southbound actually crosses over into the northbound side, and is surrounded by dividers on both sides. Crazy stuff. Anyway, that's where they'll be working. Agreed to take the Pike straight to 495 if you want to avoid that.

If you're coming up 395 northbound to 290, recommended take the Pike exit and hitch 495 from the Pike, as the construction won't be till after that exit on 290.

I may be making a surprise visit to the Mansion, maybe. Time will tell.

I've taken rt 3, (its called the Fedrick Everett once you enter NH) as an alternate route before. To go that way do I still need to take 290?

I hate traffic so any ways that avoid construction areas are my way.

Sounds like its going to be a little bit longer of a hike on the Mass Pike. I don't know about the rest but I like to avoid the Mass Pike if I can (usually I can't though because it is so convinent) for the simple reason that I'd rather avoid the free-for-alls at the toll booths.

Oh well, if its not a problem with the Mansion staff maybe I could leave earlier to get a jump on weekend traffic and arrive a little earlier. Maybe shoot for an ETA of between 10 and 11AM.
