purchased on dec 5, 03 I replaced the engine a month later. Now a month later the story begins. I was on the interstate going about 55, when i threw it into third to pass. When I was done, I went to shift to fourth, it dident go. so long story short, i only have third gear. the shifter is not locked, it will move freely, but it feels "blank" like there is nothing there. So what is my problem?, Clutch? or Trany?

Check your shift cable first.
This is easy to do. Have someone move the shifter and see if it moves the shift tower at the trans. Look for unsecured boot (outside at trans) or clevis clip (inside in front of shifter).

If you don't find a problem with the shifter, you may have sheared a pin on the shift tower in the trans. This is a difficult repair. Find a good shop or replace the trans, if this is the case. The '01 MY Focus MTX75 should have the fix for this issue but it's not a direct bolt-on for the Contour MTX75. A few guys know how to make the Focus fix work in the Contour.

Both cases above can leave you stuck in the last gear you were in before symptom event.

OK so I am making progress. When i move the shift tower, the stick moves, so this means it's internal, right. Is what ever peice is broken concidered an "Internaly lubricated part"?

Just to make sure I understand, you can move the shift tower (levers at trans) and doing so you move the stick (shift lever in vehicle), right?

If this is correct there is nothing wrong with the cable.

This means the reason you can't feel gears is internal to the trans.

It is possible to bend forks or lose sequoâ??s, but normally this results in not being able to engage a particular gear.

Stuck in a gear, I'll bet the bolt on the tower sheared.
