That's part of why I think they need to be removed. I'd really be scared that some debris might remain from not fully gutting them.

Gutting them is only part of the modifications you need to do to make it a worth while mod IMO. When you see what the exhaust ports of the heads have to dump into, it's easy to see what needs to be done. That is the other half of this mod.
