I agree that fighting is part of the game, but there was a code that said you would never punch someone from behind, if you are going to fight someone then you face them and do your thing, cheap shots are not going to help the game, and stopping that from happennig is not going to alienate some fans. I think that is the only part that needs fixing. If someone gets hurt from a clean hit then that is fine, it's the price one pays. When people get hurt, permanently or not, from a cheap shot, that's where I have problems.

That's exactly my point. Attendance is down mostly because of specific teams' difficulties, not because of the NHL's decline in general.
As soon as Pittsburgh gets its things together, attendance will follow.

You mean "league"? And, yes.

One player being singled out and sticked so obviously for half a game is an extreme rarity if that. We're talking pro games here, not pick up at the local rink. If the player has a problem with it, he needs to open his mouth to the ref. If the ref doesn't watch for it and call a penalty, it's his and the league's fault.

Cmon, this thread was started because a coach sent his goons on the ice with 2 seconds left in regulation solely out of frustration. It's the coach's fault and the officials' for letting Calgary make a useless line change.

Fighting is one thing. Smashing someone's head into the ice, breaking two of his vertebrae, and smacking your stick against someone's temple like it's a pinata is another. The latter are unacceptable, even if certain watchers (who don't deserve to be called "fans") encourage this type of violence.

Ef you goys wont reale oky, cheak oot the Quebec Senior Professional League... http://www.tomifobia.com/black/hockey_fighting.shtmlWell, ok it's not real hockey and not really relevant to the discussion here. I'm just stirring the pot. I've been a hocky fan since the days of Brayn Watson and Dennis Polonich. I cheered Probert and Kocur. Willie Huber carrieds a purse. The goons of the 70's are around today, they are younger, faster and stronger. However, the game has suffered recently with a marked unprofessional and un-sportsmanlike flavor. I'm taking my kids the Wings v. Colorado on Saturday. I have actually considered what they might see. In the past I had never given it any consideration. This simple 'cause for pause,' if you will, is what degrades the game for all. Tough, hard hitting sport is fine. The occasional fight or retribution for a questionalbe hit is even ok. Blatent cheap shots, sucker punches and other cowardly behavior should be met harshly by the league. Hockey is not a sport for cowards, nor cheap punks. My ramblings are opinion only. Mark

you mean there has been slashing and high sticking for more than 5 years!? no [censored]...... mtl.....man i totally get your point, but i dont think you are getting mine..... totally glad you have been involved with hockey more than 30 years, glad you know your stuff..... but man my point is.....if you want to talk specifics, that is fine....i am talking about respect....whether or not high sticking is a part of the game is a fine arguement, i will start another thread.....but where is the respect is skating through the neutral zone, purposely hitting someone in the side of the head.....that is not high sticking, that is a blatant attack with a pure lack of respect..... yes i know my first post was about the predators, because that was the particular incident that sparked my rant, i chose to defend my team and players as any fan would, i didnt mean it to sound like i was only jumping on some bandwagon cause one guy got a couple of stitches...honestly it wouldnt have mattered if it were the flames and red wings, (preds and wings have a pretty rivalry developing and lord knows preds fans hate the wings) but if it were the wings in the preds place i would still be mad, cause what is the point in sending 3 defensman PLUS oliwa (big "power-forward" as melrose likes to say) for a 2 second left in regulation, down by two goals face off.....was that defensman gonna score 2 goals for you in 2 seconds? no....so why is he taking face-offs...... and no i was getting all whiney cause things got a little rough against my predators, check the stats and you will see that the preds have their fair share of penalty minutes and even fighting majors..... oh yeah true the preds are only in their 6th year, but nashville has had hockey for a long time before that....i started playing when i was 6, we werent even allowed to check until we were 12, and not allowed to throw the gloves until i was 18....that is when i lost my scholarship.....blew out my knee going back to touch up on an icing call and was tripped from behind....knee was the first thing to hit the end-boards.....got the icing call though...

Of course it's acceptable in the eyes of the NHL. You act like this is the first time it's happened, well it's not. It's been going on for decades and will continue until the NHL makes tougher rules to rid the sport of fighting. But they are NOT going to do that! This was brewing for weeks between these two teams and if the NHL cared to nip it in the bud they could have. Unless you outlaw fighting all together some will toe the line, some will step over and some will skate past it at a full sprint. None of this breaks new ground.

Antiramie, Yes i did mean "league" sorry for the spelling, what you should of read is: a defensemen often gets "poked" sp?? especially so if he is a good one and the other player cannot get in front of the net to receive the puck and score, alot of times that defensemen will cross check, slash, or which ever you want. mikey boy, if you think my english is bad you should see my french that's what happens when a typical conversation is 50% french 50% english ( is my spelling that bad) csc99svt, i think i do get your point, it was useless violence but the fact of the matter is that there was always violence in this game, even more so today. I called one of my hardcore hockey friends and asked him about it, and he was telling me that the situation is getting out of hand and that the league needs to do something fast before someone does get killed or seriously injured. So if i was wrong in my previous post i do apologize

only hockey fans could come together and eventually get along......
this could be a whole nother topic....mtl was talking earlier about the lack of superstars in the game....the man is right....where did they go? no one is gonna score 50 goals this year (kovalchuck could but i doubt it...)
does anyone think anything can be done!?
i am only 23, i currently work at a pharmacy and we use old name rexall and after i learned earlier this season that edmontons arena was called rexall place, i did some research.....yes i did grow up playing hockey, but i was watching echl games down here in nashville and catching scores every now and then pre-sportscenter.....when i learned that in 83-84 when the oilers won a cup, gretzky has score something like 205 points on the season....ONE FRIGGIN SEASON!!!!!!!!!! this is what mtl was talking about....where did stuff like that go? do we even have a 100 point scorer this year? sheesh....
