Yup, remember when a general fight ment that both teams would be on the ice fighting and both goalies got into it...that was some funny sh!t
Originally posted by mikey boy: agreed. there are way too many teams in the NHL. the NHL went south as soon as they changed the names of the conferences. eastern and western whats that?? we need to go back to old time hockey, eddie shore hockey.
That is probably why there is no more big talent on the ice, the big "stars" of today would of been on the 2 or 3 trio about 15 years ago

for smooth svt: you missed the point, i didnt say hockey was too rough, i am not being a pansy or anything, but there is distinct difference between being clean and rough (totally acceptable) and just not having any respect....twenty years ago, as you put it, hockey players didnt hit each other upside the head with their sticks and people didnt attack someone from behind when they cant see you as they fall to the ice and break their neck, that stuff didnt happen, and goalies have only been wearing mask for 20-30 years now....you dont need to try and point out that i am whining about it being too rough, get it straight....
and mikey boy, nashville not having a team, that is kind of harsh man....why does the nhl have too many teams? that dont have any more teams than the other 3 big sports.....
but why nashville in particular? we fought and lobbied for a team just like everyone else did for expansion purposes, we built our arena, we built our team, we put butts in the seats, and with one of the strictest philosophies and policies on creating a young team with no premade superstars, and one of the lowest salaries in the nhl, we are looking at the playoffs.....so why cant we contend? why is it because we are in the south? plenty of teams further south than us, plenty of teams further south than us, that are not playoff contenders....plenty of teams further north that are not playoff contenders either.....
and come on people....."well i aint watched hockey since 1987, that was the last year it was pure....blah blah blah....they took my team and moved them and everysince then i just havent had the heart to even wat sportscenter highlights...guys did get paid more than blah blah blah"
i am glad that in life the only thing you have to worry about is whether or not you think hockey is "pure" get a grip man, it would be different if hockey were the only sport like this, but look around, every sport is like this, and it is even beginning to spill over to where it is illegal, college sports.....if you wanna get anal and whiny.....who was the last professional athlete to refuse have of their salary because they were injured.....lets see....a-rod.....no, jeter.....no, iverson....no.......oh wait it was a hockey player, hasek.........

Well first thing first the first goalie to wear a mask was Jacques Plante in 1959 against the NY Rangers.
Second of all the reason for all the high sticking, and slashes sp?? is due to the pressure the players have to make their bonus, cause now if you want guys to performe you have to include that in their contracts (ex:if they make 25 goals they get x amount and every goal above that they get an extra x amount).
Third i don't know how long you've been watching hockey or how old you are but i can tell you this much, up here in Montreal where hockey is an institution, there are alot of old time hockey fans that are slowly stopping watching hockey games, and these are people that almost compare hockey to religion, these people grew up on hockey watching guys like Maurice Richard,Toe Blake, Eddy Shore,Bobby Clarke....The old Forum use to be full every single game, even when they moved to new new arena the seats used to be full all the time and if you look now they are slowy getting empty, and not just in Montreal, Boston, Pittsburgh and a few other places too, where hockey has had a home for a while now.
Like i said in my previous post there are no more big stars...do you know why a few years ago they changed the rules, cause there is alot less goals being made, and they had to come up with a plan to make the not so good hockey players look somewhat decent.
EDIT: I do not condone what happened last week, i find it pretty absurde what some players will do because they are pissed, i don't mind when 2 guys get into a fight, in fact i expect to see fights in a game, it's been part of hockey tradition since the early days.

you dont have to talk at me like i am some little 4 year old who doesnt know a thing about a hockey.....
i am glad you know exactly who was the first to wear a goalie mask and what year he did it....good for you....not the issue here.....
i understand how contract bonuses work, so do you...good job.....not the issue here.....
but you attribute slashing and injuries to contract bonuses, you are absurd....you honestly believe bertuzzi was sent out as a headhunter after moore with an intent to injure cause the canucks were gonna slip him some more money? or you think that oliwa threw down a linesman sat night to continue fighting with as many predators as he could cause he would get a contract extension.....
your missing my point......i dont care whether you think the game still has superstars in it or not....you can make the same case for every professional sport out there.....
"well the game just is played like it used to be, blah blah, i remember when gordie howe....lah blah blah.."
i never said any of those guys were bad, matter of fact i never said ANYTHING bout any those guys, and i dont care that this is the reason you and your buddies boycott the tv everytime a canadiens game comes on the CBC....good for you.....
There seems to be very little respect left in the game of hockey....attacking players from behind is not a sign of respect (and it has nothing with do anything about the game being too rough, superstars not being present, or the purity lost in this religional institution that we call hockey) it is simply a matter of respect....there isnt any....

You should learn to read and get your facts straight before you start bashing or posting crap....because you had your team for a whole 5 years and you think you know hockey.
You b!tchin' because of high sticking well...there always was high sticking/slashing and that's not just in the NHL, it also happens in the LHJMQ, novice, peewee, atome, bantam ligue also. And the difference is that NOW it's the only thing worth talking about, because the game is so boooooring nothing exciting ever happens.
oh and don't try to debate hockey with someone who's been involved with the game for the past 30 years.

I have been watching/playing hockey for as long as I can remeber, and I think that hockey has lost it's touch there are things that should not be done, for example moore getting hit from behind, that is just not smart hockey like it was back in the 50's 60's etc. but I will say things in the hockey world are getting turned upside down. I believe that fighting is a part of hockey but there has always been an unwritten code among players, even in midget hockey, or juniors. every one knew the rules of the game and their job, they didn't want to step outside the lines because they knew they would be punished. That is why the big guys who were there to fight/enforce would do so, and not the talented guys who were there to score. I think that it is good that hockey has found homes in new places, it could use the popularity, but I don't agree with moving a team from place to place just for more money.

I beseech you Mr. Hockey God, may I please have your approval to step into this conversation, for I am only a lowly Lightning fan, who have only been in the league for 12 years...

1. What in the world do slashing/high-sticking penalties have to do with scoring goals? Most of the players that commit these infractions (slashing, cross-checking, etc) are defenseman in front of or around the net. I'm sure these are the guys who are getting paid to put up goals, right?
2. No, the reason for the excessive contact as of late is purely from lack of officiating. Where are the obstruction calls that were promised to be made?? Referees decide to call hooking and interference the first week of the season, and then they stop. Players are taking advantage of the leniency, period.

Montreal's attendance avg is still well over 20,000. Pittsburgh?? You know why their attendance is last? Check out how many points they have this season and their production the past ten years. Boston's will pick up slowly as they prove they're Cup worthy. And places are emptying where hockey has had a home for awhile?? What places? Detroit? NY? Vancouver? Toronto? Philly? Open your eyes please... Those places are still going strong.

Easy there Lightning boy...we're going for a number 1 draft pick.
You also need to consider that we have THE oldest rink in the NHL, and don't get much in the lines of corporate accounts for season tickets. That tied with a large rebuilding year doesn't help...
Give us time though...our attendance was down in the pre-Lemieux days as well.

Did you ever play hockey in some sort of a ligue, let me tell you that when you have been hit or have been "sticked" in the ribs by the same player for half of the game sometimes you loose it. Mind you that it's not always the case. And yes some defense player do have in their contracts in writing that if they score x amount of goals they will have an bonus

Well maybe for TB 20,000 is good but i can assure you that 20,000 is bad for Montreal, 5-10 years ago you could not go to the game and get tickets at the door(maybe from a scalper but that's not the case) and now you can easly get some, so i am right attendances are going down.
And who does not want to see a game in the series????

You want to compare this post to your original one? You want to [censored] about where's the respect but when fellow fans want to [censored] too you slap at them because they want to talk big picture and not just about your Preditors. If you can't stand to see your guys get roughed up once in a while you need to find another sport. A lot of people watch hockey for the fighting. That's why hockey is the only sport other then boxing where it's allowed. The NHL knows this. It makes money, right or wrong is not the issue. The NHL is going to be very careful not to alienate these fans.
