Does anyone have a clue how difficult it would be to go from the normal atx to something like the paddle shift like what Ferrari has? I'm not talking about mounting the paddles or anything like that, but without a clutch it seems like it shouldn't be too hard. The reason I ask is that me and a friend were talking about this the other day and neither of us knew enough about the subject to argue a side.

why not just switch to an mtx? Your still gonna have the extra 150+ pounds of the weight of the atx, not to mention bigger drivetrain losses.

See there are two different things:

1) The manu-matic type things, which are basically an automatic transmission that you can control. These have little/no gains, actually most of the time you lose speed.. plus you still have the drivetrain loss and big weight difference.

2) The true clutchless manuals, found in a few HIGH end cars. These have a clutch, flywheel, all the good stuff.. so they don't have the drivetrain loss of an automatic, its just a manual transmission that uses hydraulics rather than your foot. However.. you still have alot of weight added.

The clutchless manuals (#2) aren't bad (I still wouldn't want one) but are most likely ALOT more expensive. Its not as simple as just controlling your automatic, like #1.

those transmissions are not automatics at all, they are almost a normal manual that is electro-hydraulically conrolled. If you want to move from a selector lever to paddles, that is also a big deal, because you would need to actually put motors or hydraulics in the tranny to do what the lever does, the lever is not a switch, it is a mechanical arm. So, no, it's not possible.

For parts, maybe. You really only see those on cars that are approaching $100k, so who knows..

You wouldn't want to. Those things feel like trash.
