I've been taking my 98 CSVT to the same repair shop over the years for tires and other miscellaneous repairs. Never had any problems with the folks there, but they're telling me that I need to have the rear brakes & calipers replaced. The cost will be over $600. Does this sound right? The car has 80,000 miles.

Not really sounds to much.
Buy new caliprs/and pads and then install them and then bleed the brakes yourself and your done.

I paid $165 for parts for calipler slide pin set, caliper boots, rear shoes/drums/hardware kit, two wheel cylinders, and brake fluid.

So if you do it yourself it is cheaper.

I just did my rear brakes, here's what I paid:

Remanufactured (new) rear calipers: $110 for both
New premium (Brembo) rotors: $100 for both
New Bendix pads from Stazi: $50 for rear set

Time it took me to do the job with basic hand tools: 1.5 hours.

Even at an expensive $80/hour labor rate, it should only be costing you about $380.

Screw 'em. Do it yourself, or take it somewhere else.

i think you folks are forgetting about the parts price mark-up which is usually 40%,after all they are in business to make money and they are probably not familiar with the best parts sources for the contique(maybe they dont know about stazi?)if you dont think its fair get more estimates

heh, no. Thats a rip. The prices I listed above are retail prices from SPMotorsports.com, and even NAPA sells rotors for $50/each. Stazi gives a good price on a great pad, but you can also get a set of rear pads for less hat $40 at NAPA and CarQuest stores if you wanted, and thats retail.

This shop must have a 100% markup on already markedup-retail products. I say he's taking it in the tailpipe, and should definately go somewhere else. And thats being more than fair.
