At this juncture I believe that weâ??ve gone far enough with large-scale military actions. A few weeks ago I would not have felt this way. We as the United States should maintain our commitments to rebuild and oversee both Afghanistan and Iraq until they are rebuilt, stable and democratic. If we withdraw we seriously damage our reputation (even further for opponents of the war) and our honor by not fulfilling promises made to even our newest allies. But after and during this reconstruction periods I believe we have gone and done as much as we can or should with our large-scale military forces. The United States should also move its forces out of Saudi Arabia and into Iraq since that seems to be a major complaint with Al-Q (Iâ??m sure it wont solve anything, but Id just like to use it to further point out their hypocrisy to potential recruits). These forces should only be used now and in the future when the larger infrastructure of Al-Q finds such a safe haven as Afghanistan was.
What the world should do now is rely on police and intelligence forces. The best way to fight terrorism is by treading more lightly, with every action, and every enemy casualty more Al-Q recruits are created, more fanatical ones. Along with the Police and intelligence forces of other countries and the United States working together with those capable (UK most of all) should employ their Special Forces more heavily. Less attention needs to be lavished upon tiptoeing around the Sovereignty (Not to invade or anything, just for individual raids) of countries which will not or cannot act against terrorists. The problem of Sovereignty delays quick action which is absolutely vital in this type of action. By combining good Police and Intelligence work if all went as it should these actions should be reasonably effective at destroying terrorist cells and killing terrorist leaders. As a benefit of the course of these actions less toes will be stepped on, and likely the United States will be able to mend fences, build bridges, and overall enjoy more public support worldwide.

Set up a meeting of compromise between Israel and Palestine. If the holy land is really holy, then it is owned by nobody. Why not declare that land as it's own state ran by a comitee or something with half of it being palastinians and half of it people from israel. Do something where it is not run by a specific people, the holy land belongs to everybody. Use their ideals and beliefs and run with it to create a reasonable compromise. I'd also clean up the immigration, what a mess that is, I know first-hand what a b*tch it is to go through.

This could be interpreted as appeasment.
Militant Islam is not going to be negotiated with. Negotiation is seen as weakness. Not responding to attacks is seen as weakness. Withdraw is seen as weakness. They hit us harder and harder through the 90s, culiminating in WTC 9/11 as a result of percieved weakness. There is no "treading lightly enough". They wish to kill us, our way of life, our offspring. Women, children, makes no difference...Jihad is on whether we want it or not. We can either fight or flee. You propose to follow Spain's lead?
The Nixon Doctrine (not dissimilar from the Bush doctrine)
1) No NEW military support for other countries...we are up to our necks in problems. We created much of the Iraq sitation, we created Bin Laden, Israel, N. Korea...YES, we sewed the seeds for current problems but we still have a mess to clean up..
2) That is not to say we will not intervien DIRECTLY. Just no more proping up other nations
3) No government sanctioned support of terrorism can be tolerated. Period. Any government that aids and abeds will be delt with harshly. All ways of dealing with up to and including military on the table. We now have evidence that we say what we mean to back that up now (Sadam & Taliban). Make it COUNT...we WILL act alone as needed. Help would be nice but the UN security councel is corrupt and not looking out for our security (see below). We make it clear that although we may not occupy or win hearts and minds that the leadership will be DECAPITATED. Why...because this is the ONLY way to deal with terrorists. They need safe haven, financial support, places to train, recruit. They need cooporation from governments. Terrorists are nebulous, mutating, moving targets. Very hard/Impossible to fully seek and destroy. Governments are not, and rulers that support terrorists seem (99%) to be tyrants that are looking out for there own little evil interests. We must make it clear they want no part of the hell we will unleash on them if they support terrorists. Only then can we turn the tide.
4) So intell...yes, and lots of it. No more gutting intel capablitity. Police action...NO. Police can deal with terrorists ONLY if governments let them. MILITARY is required to deal with governments.
5) The Doctrine is starting to work...Libya - Momar wants no part of this. Iran, FINALLY let the IAEC in amnd not because we were nice to them. N.Korea...6 way talks underway under OUR turns and not because we were sweety talking them either.
6) This is not about making friends. We have a serious threat that not all are taking seriously. France, Russia have been/are corrupt and are looking out for financial interests and swayed the UN SC vote against us. Spain has buckled under pressure...we cannot afford to...
7) And related to #6..we call for a full UN investigation into kickbacks and corruption as it relates to the decsion to invade Iraq. Everybody, the US included...lets get this "we did it for oil" "for Halliburton" BS cleared up once and for all. BUT IN ADDITION...the French bank that contolled ALL the oil fo Food money and a full accounting of the 4-7 billion dollars that Sadam skimmed, and which foriegn (read FRANCE) interests were part of it. And the French supplied intel on inspector movements and secrete prewar UN meetings, and the Russian arms deals right up till invasion day. An Kofi himself...how much did UN leadership know of this. We need to shine the light of day on this den of rats..
I hate war. I hate that we must fight. I have served and I have seen man die. I have lost friends to war, and I know I could lose more. I wish you were right frankly, that we could talk our way out of this. But I know deep down that we would delay the inevitable, that a greater loss of life or worse would occur. I know the more liberal elements in our society mean well. But I also know they are wrong..as they were wrong in the equally frightening cold war..

First off, become far more transparent. Lay out as many cards on the table to the American people as possible within the context of maintaining national security. I truly believe that the facts are there to ensure multilateral and grassroots support. The facts need to be shared as much as possible.
Iraq and Afghanistan. Stay the course and give them the time and resources to rebuild the democracies correctly (meaning a stable governing structure fairly elected).
Repeal the PATRIOT act. Intelligence experts have proven it does not improve security, but does threaten our rights.
Support Isreal. The lands Isreal had are theirs by right of conquest. A process is needed to either assimilate the Palestinians into Isreali society or to repatriate them into surrounding lands. Be willing to add military force to stop the Palestinian terror attacks.
Europe. They aren't going to like us. Period. They are looking at themselves as the reprise of the second superpower. Keep terms as warm as possible, and seek their help in matters, but not at the expense of our national interests.
Home: Repeal the No Child Left Behind Act. It is a measure that is guaranteed to doom every public school. Get the federal government out of the education business. Leave standards to the states and curriculums to the districts.
Just a start.

Drink 30 year old scotch while I sit in my presidential yacht on the Potomac... No, wait, that woulda been Nixon's response.
Perhaps I'd go ask my dad what to do, if my dad had been the head of the CIA and a president and had had a gulf war himself previously. And he'd probably tell me to kick butt in Afghanistan.
No, wait, that was GWB's response. Except then GWB declined to take GHWB's advice on Iraq.
If there were quick, effective solutions to terrorism, the Israelis would have have found 'em already, with the decades of a head start they've had in dealing with terror.
But the terror problem is bigger than that which is fixed by rolling in the tanks. So how do we create a modern, moderate, pan-Arab (or global?) middle class overnight? Until/unless the fundamentalist masses come around to agree with us, little will change and new terrorists will rise up to replace the dead and captured ones.
Until then, will we be any more successful at eliminating terrorism than Tel Aviv has been?
Go ahead and flame me. But tell me how I'm wrong.
