The best way to fight terrorism is by treading more lightly, with every action, and every enemy casualty more Al-Q recruits are created, more fanatical ones.
As a benefit of the course of these actions less toes will be stepped on, and likely the United States will be able to mend fences, build bridges, and overall enjoy more public support worldwide.
This could be interpreted as appeasment.
Militant Islam is not going to be negotiated with. Negotiation is seen as weakness. Not responding to attacks is seen as weakness. Withdraw is seen as weakness. They hit us harder and harder through the 90s, culiminating in WTC 9/11 as a result of percieved weakness. There is no "treading lightly enough". They wish to kill us, our way of life, our offspring. Women, children, makes no difference...Jihad is on whether we want it or not. We can either fight or flee. You propose to follow Spain's lead?
The Nixon Doctrine (not dissimilar from the Bush doctrine)
1) No NEW military support for other countries...we are up to our necks in problems. We created much of the Iraq sitation, we created Bin Laden, Israel, N. Korea...YES, we sewed the seeds for current problems but we still have a mess to clean up..
2) That is not to say we will not intervien DIRECTLY. Just no more proping up other nations
3) No government sanctioned support of terrorism can be tolerated. Period. Any government that aids and abeds will be delt with harshly. All ways of dealing with up to and including military on the table. We now have evidence that we say what we mean to back that up now (Sadam & Taliban). Make it COUNT...we WILL act alone as needed. Help would be nice but the UN security councel is corrupt and not looking out for our security (see below). We make it clear that although we may not occupy or win hearts and minds that the leadership will be DECAPITATED. Why...because this is the ONLY way to deal with terrorists. They need safe haven, financial support, places to train, recruit. They need cooporation from governments. Terrorists are nebulous, mutating, moving targets. Very hard/Impossible to fully seek and destroy. Governments are not, and rulers that support terrorists seem (99%) to be tyrants that are looking out for there own little evil interests. We must make it clear they want no part of the hell we will unleash on them if they support terrorists. Only then can we turn the tide.
4) So intell...yes, and lots of it. No more gutting intel capablitity. Police action...NO. Police can deal with terrorists ONLY if governments let them. MILITARY is required to deal with governments.
5) The Doctrine is starting to work...Libya - Momar wants no part of this. Iran, FINALLY let the IAEC in amnd not because we were nice to them. N.Korea...6 way talks underway under OUR turns and not because we were sweety talking them either.
6) This is not about making friends. We have a serious threat that not all are taking seriously. France, Russia have been/are corrupt and are looking out for financial interests and swayed the UN SC vote against us. Spain has buckled under pressure...we cannot afford to...
7) And related to #6..we call for a full UN investigation into kickbacks and corruption as it relates to the decsion to invade Iraq. Everybody, the US included...lets get this "we did it for oil" "for Halliburton" BS cleared up once and for all. BUT IN ADDITION...the French bank that contolled ALL the oil fo Food money and a full accounting of the 4-7 billion dollars that Sadam skimmed, and which foriegn (read FRANCE) interests were part of it. And the French supplied intel on inspector movements and secrete prewar UN meetings, and the Russian arms deals right up till invasion day. An Kofi himself...how much did UN leadership know of this. We need to shine the light of day on this den of rats..
I hate war. I hate that we must fight. I have served and I have seen man die. I have lost friends to war, and I know I could lose more. I wish you were right frankly, that we could talk our way out of this. But I know deep down that we would delay the inevitable, that a greater loss of life or worse would occur. I know the more liberal elements in our society mean well. But I also know they are wrong..as they were wrong in the equally frightening cold war..
